i'm new to this thread but a veteran to gatlinburg/pigeonforge.

i think y'all are putting too much faith in mobile phones/television or whatever getting the word out. did the police drive around with loudspeakers?

everytime i've gone to gatlinburg, unless i'm heading into town for food or going out, the cell phones and laptops and tv are OFF.

the cabins are secluded..so many are in odd locations and at the ends of long dead-end roads on a ledge or built into the side of the mountains and i use those visits to get away from all the electronic shite i deal with on a daily basis and enjoy the scenery and outdoor activities.

its very easy for me to imagine lots of people were in this boat and figured out too late they were in danger.

They did go door to door at some point, another factor was concern of where to send evacuees. Also, not all cell carriers work equally in that area, Verizon works better than ATT in that area.

ATT didn't work worth a shite when i was there two years ago. Stayed at a cabin way up the mountain in Sevierville. Only turned on the tv one night out of 5. Too busy drinking in the hot tub and enjoying the outdoors. Also spent a couple of days hiking in the national forest. Stayed off of old mountain road.

There was a story here in Nashville that had a lady saying she had called 911 early in the day asking if she needed to evacuate. The dispatcher said not at that time but she would receive a callback if orders came down. Fast forward a few hours, cop knocks on the door in a rush saying "you're packing right now, right?" Lady says no, that she had never been notified. I'm sure the cops couldn't get to every residence

Apparently, you have to opt in to the notification system on the County's website and it is run by a private company. I could see how many folks didn't know about it

If that is the case then they should have had officers and volunteers.

I guess hindsight and all..

I live not far from there in the WNC mountains. You're obviously aware of this and wouldn't you think the local emergency services are too? There has to be a better plan in place than what obviously was. You can't have such a large portion of your revenue completely tourist based and not have some kind of alternate means of communication in the event of something potentially catastrophic. What did people do before cell phones and internet? This was a failure in large part by the emergency services and leadership there. It's too late now but, this has to be addressed to avoid a situation like this ever again.

The winds were blowing extremely strong and a lot of people did not heed the warnings properly. A wildfire is the last thing that people suspect to be dangerous.

It was a lot of bad luck coming together to cause this. There was something like 15,000 people in the area and so far we have 13 deaths. I feel for those that have been injured or passed, but it could of been a lot worse.

Local radio had people calling in and a cop who works in the area called in to tell his side. He said they left with chainsaws in the trunk to go knock on doors etc. He said they were physically pulling people out of their homes. Pulling people from a backyard using a garden hose to fight the flames. He said one person was hiding in their home would not answer the door so they broke windows to open doors.

Deputies went to the cabin, but did not find any sign that anyone was there. Constance did not have a car, so Michael doesn't know if they ran on foot or if someone could have picked them up.

This story is insane and heartbreaking. I fear they wandered of the road and didn't make it.

I'm very close with Summer family. The three. It's used to work for me. It's absolutely devastating. I've been visiting them in the hospital as much as possible. I'm completely heartbroken. They have abfund started to help pay for the hospital bills. I'll post it in case anyone wants to donate. Every little bit counts.

I have family who own a cabin up there. They got to their property yesterday. Nearly everything around them burned but, their place was spared. I'm very happy for them but, the beauty of the area took a big hit.

I think their place is more of a modern design. Probably less wood involved and roofing that provided better protection. Possibly metal.
