9 year old boy. He likes stories, hates reading. He's just completely obsessed with video games. It's all he can talk about and all he can think about 24/7. It got so bad that he couldn't complete a creative writing assignment on what he would do if he were an animal of his choosing because "animals can't play video games". So the rule was put in place to curb some of the game playing as well as get him to think about something else.

This is what I see.
The article is certainly exaggerating the problem when it says "the great literacy crisis," but there is a lot of truth in it. Reading is the foundation for lifelong education, and kids just aren't reading like they used to.
There is a segment in the education world that believes "technology literacy" is just as important as reading comprehensive. While I will not argue that knowing technology is as important as ever, I will argue that knowing how to text, use social media and browse the internet is not the technology literacy that can overcome weak reading skills.

Did they even look at some of the Obama supporters? I highly doubt this has ANY credibility.

Great parenting, colorchangintiger.
At his age, you might want to look into a coding camp this summer. Let him start learning the basics of coding and creating their own video games. Turn that passion into a marketable skill.
Ive seen it time and time again - they'll grasp on to it and all of a sudden, they are asking you to go to the bookstore so they can buy coding books.

Liberal as in generous toward him. My point was that as a kid who liked to read 20 minutes for an hour of video gaming would have been a pretty awesome trade off.
But, when we were kids video games probably didn't have the hold they have now, and as your son doesn't like to read at all it makes sense to make it an attractive arrangement. As a non-parent (yet) I'm just always interested into how the motivational stuff works.

Average would mean literate right?

I taught 11th grade English at a terrible inner city hs in Tulsa in 2009.
I could not assign reading assignments to my kids because they could not read. I literally had to read to this kids every class.
These kids were not dumb, they were illiterate.
Six years at LSU did not prepare me for what I encountered.
I quit after a semester.
Ask yourself this question:
How do kids get to the 11th grade without being able to read?

I know they took phonetics out of our local curriculum. Kids can't read. They learn sight words and then try to apply them beyond 3rd grade and its a disaster.
They can no longer doing out words. It's pathetic

well, 50% of the OT can't spell, so no surprise there.

Yeah, he likes it more than he leads on. He hems and haws when I tell him how much reading time he has accrued, but he'll go pick something out to read, set the timer on his iPod, and knock it out without me even telling him that he needs to do it.

True or false: a kid should know how to read before entering kindergarten. TRUE.
THIS IS ALL ABOUT GENETICS AND PARENTING.

you might try 20 minutes of video games for an hour of reading...

We don't have video games in the house or on ipads, and we tell our kid that too much screen time will mess up her brain.
It's almost annoying how much she reads.

Reading is not merely recognizing the words independently, but also comprehending the material as a whole. My wife is a new 2nd grade teacher at an urban school. Her 1st few weeks was spent assessing their skill sets. Not a single child scored 1st grade 12th month, which is what one would expect going into 2nd grade. Most scored at various ranges in kindergarten in all subjects. As a teacher how do you teach 2nd grade material to kids that are that far behind?? My first instinct was, WTF were the previous year teachers doing. It's not that, it's parental involvement. With the sheer volume of material that has to be taught during the day, it is a necessity the child review at night with the parent and it's not happening. At most 10% of the parents participate. Then, of those that do, they aren't able to help because they lack the intelligence(keep in mind it's second grade) to assist the child. On a measuring task one parent didn't know how to measure centimeters. Several parents didn't know the Executive, Judicial, and Legislative branches.

Exactly. They've developed their own form of gibberish/pig English they use to communicate with one another.

I bet she is one of those teachers who likes to use big words that no one uses anymore and acts like anybody who has no idea what she's talking about is illiterate.

My kids have to get a certain # of AR points each week by Monday when they get home from school. If they don't then no technology (TV, computer, Tablets) for the week. They have a poster up on the hall closet by their bedroom doors where they can see how many points they need by which dates.
