The "peripherique" highway that encircles the French capital was closed in both directions in the west of Paris after cabbies put up barricades on the roads, officials said.

Access to three terminals at Paris's busy Charles de Gaulle airport in the north was blocked and cabs were converging on the Orly airport in the south and at train stations inside the city.

"The goal is to block space because we are really fed up," Karim Asnoun of the CGT union told AFP.

Thousands of cabs were also due to assemble in several of France's other major cities as part of Thursday’s strike.

I'm sure this will help their cause.

It's sad that they can't handle the competition.

Adjust or die.

dang, I was going to use a cab while in Paris, but it looks like they are all out of service; therefore, I now am forced to use Uber.

they are all pissed that their medallions they paid good $ for are now next to worthless.

At least that is how it works in US cities.

The cab model is extremely outdated and ran by crooks/corrupt politicians. It was due for an overhaul and they are upset that they didn't think of the idea first. (I am upset that I didn't think of the idea either).

what other industry is corrupt and inefficiently ran that could benefit from an iphone app revolutionizing it.

I'll be there in a few weeks. Already planned on taking Uber. It's $35 for a ride to the hotel in an Audi A6 or $65 to ride in some French taxi.

that's the way they roll over there, when airport workers protest, they all go sit out on the runways to shut it down

in their defense, they are operating legally under a statutory scheme. Uber is not, so you can't really expect competition

now, this leads to the question of the need of governmental regulations in this area, but that's a different discussion

The French like to protest about everything. I was there this summer and every week there was some sort of public service shutdown

France's economy suffers because of all their strict labor laws. Very few companies have interest in putting sites in France because it is such a pain in the arse to deal with the labor force. You have to get permission from the government before you can do a mass layoff, and even after you get this permission, all the laid off people come back and sue the company. It's absurd the entitlement they have.

So they go on strike & block roadways to get people to stop using Uber? I don't think they are doing this right

THey have a legitimate argument. They are told "Hey you can't taxi without spending a ton of money to buy some paper saying you are a cab"

Then some guy comes in and taxis people around without paying for a medallion.
