This is not an issue of socialism, or even an issue of abortion, even though it will be painted that way.
This is an attempt by the state* to curtail social spending, believe it or not.
The problems that states* are running into are is that they are realizing they can't afford the social welfare programs they have in place. But they know they cannot take them away or else there will be riots.
So the next best thing is to limit the number of people on the social welfare systems. They can't do it directly, as tried in earlier parts of the century with eugenics programs, so they have to reframe the issue.
Now it's one of pro-choice, or women's rights, or whatever. And it makes it an easier sell.
This same thing is being done in the USA, to much ballyhoo. The issue of free birth control and state subsidized abortions is a real one. The ironic thing is that the conservatives often fight it, whereas they should really wholeheartedly support it.
*state = a collective organization that uses force and violence to rule over a particular geographic area. I was not referring to a US state, in case anyone gets picky (and yes, it has happened on this site before, that's why I included this footnote)
