that rhino was going to be killed one way or another
That's a pretty silly assumption since the entire premise for it being ok to hunt the dude was that he was the most mature of the bunch and past mating age.
At the very least you have to admit he was shifty in even making it to this point, so no reason to assume he was going to be killed anyways if he's already made it this far.

I don't think you get how wildlife works. You don't just live forever when you get old and weak.
ETA: And if you're talking about poachers, it's a pretty reasonable assumption.

SIAP... So we are upset that he puts over a quarter million dollars into some of the poorest economies in the world routinely? Not to mention that the meat, hide, and other byproducts of the kill are in all likelihood going to feed, and warm the hungry? What a terrible POS.

It isn't an assumption. That rhino had already been chosen as a cull for conservation purposes.

Yeah... I was kind of tracking that one, appreciate the clarity though.
My point was that just because you get old and weak doesn't mean you're going to get shot in the Rhino face.

Why do you keep throwing the term "liberal" around just because people think it's fricked up to kill an elephant or a rhinoceros? I'm against trophy killing in general but have never voted blue and align politically only slightly left of fascism. It makes you look like a moron when you just blindly label people as a "liberal"

In almost all cases, apex predators are not tasty

I'm sitting in a deer stand rite now as I type this and will agree that hunting these large animals is wrong. I support killing animals that you actually eat and are not endangered or close to it. Why can't they have open seasons on those wild arse Africans who are driving these animals to extinction? Frick ppl

what do you think the rangers do with these animals when they become a problem and they can't sell a hunt? they get killed to cull the herd to promote breeding and genetic proliferation. these animals are not re-located cheaply and no other preserve will want a non-breeding alpha male who will disrupt their breeding

The only reason you're able to sit in that deer stand is because of the hard work done by hunters before you. Without them, we have no deer. Turkeys are a good example of this. Without turkey hunters we don't have turkey seasons in 49 states.
Typically these animals are eaten by the locals. When this happens, zero parts of the animal go to waste.

They do. Poachers are met with a shoot first, ask questions later approach.
If you are actually interested in big game hunting, three is lots of good information out there but don't shite on us from your box stand over a corn pile and call us monsters.

yea they eat like shite and often eat dead animals and shite and have all sorts of issues
it's like when you kill bears matters. if you get them when they can eat fruit? wonderful meat. if you get them after they've been scavenging? terrible (and dangerous)

ORLY?
I know a large open habitat at the Louisiana State University that is currently vacant.
The LSU Rhino's sounds pretty damn legit. You can even call him Mike

Yes, God bless the elephant killers. You guys are clearly heroes. Seeing kills like this really make people want to preserve the elephant for future generations to hunt as well.

i don't think that would even be legal
i am pretty sure it's illegal to transport these animals outside of Africa while alive
there MAY be a way for zoos to "trade" for it (since even zoos can't buy animals), but i don't think the cost of transportation (which would likely be 7-figures) would be worth the value. transportation costs for these animals are insane

it's very likely that a bull in that herd was being culled no matter what
does it make you feel better than an African ranger gets to kill the elephant instead of a rich Westerner who paid for the privilege to do his job for him?

Yea, typically you would get ripped apart while youre still alive by coyotes, wolves, lions, or hyenas or you would starve to death or be mauled by one of your own kind over territory, or you would drown.

Maybe, maybe not.
The ole boy made it a long ways against some pretty poor odds. I'd like to give him the benefit of the doubt.
I understand the purpose, I understand the points.
I still cannot get on board with killing one of these animal's unnaturally when there are only... hundreds, if that many, left on the earth.
