Primarily state vs federal control.

And I think the Reserves don't have combat arms. Not sure though.

When I got to Iraq in 08 I just folded right in to 1st Cav, its was their 3rd year long rotation in a row and were at about 70% manning across the board. They were just happy to see a body.

NG is state based, governor is commander in chief unless federally activated. Hence hurricane/flood/civil disturbance duty. Reserves are pure federal. Some other differences too.
The part time aspect is same.

If someone at your civilian job, only worked/trained one weekend a month, would he/she be as much of a contribution to the team, as someone who does it everyday?

That all depends on your Guard and civilian job. In my case we're better than our AD counterparts because we do the same job without all the mandatory training and other admin bullshite.

The National Guard is structured like the active component, in units (brigades, battalions, companies). Reserves seem to focus more individual augmentation, like ones and two's you might need to round out your manning document.
The only reserve unit I ever saw deployed as a stand alone unit was a reserve engineer company in Kuwait.

At one time I could see that. Weekend warriors versus 24/7 - 365 soldiers.

Since 2001 some regular army folk can't say shite to NG or reservists.

A friend of mine who was a reservist had returned from his 3rd tour in Iraq when my brother-in-law who was regular army infantry stationed at Killeen was about to ship out for his first.

It didn't used to be like that.
