Forks, Knives, and Spoons. Which Way Are You?

I just finished washing dishes and it made me think. I have always put my utensils in a dishwasher pointed end down. I have this phobia that if a knife was facing up, I'll cut myself grabbing it while being distracted or something. I know my in-laws place all theirs facing up which me out so much.

Is a certain way more sanitary than the other?

This. Don't want to stab myself if I'm having a clumsy moment, but also want to differentiate between forks and spoons at a glance.

Everything up. We always put knives in the back of utensil holder pointed up so they get cleaned better.

I'm an everything down guy. I try and rinse off all the dishes before they go into the dishwasher and just think of the dishwasher more as a sanitizer.

I do everything up. Knives in the back. I used to work in restaurants and quickly learned that if you put them down, they stick together much easier (causing food to remain on them).

I rarely use my dishwasher, but when I do I put them facing down.

Wow, this is so weird, last time I used the dishwasher I was wondering "Am I really doing this right?"

Everything down. This way when it is finished you leave the actual utensil unsullied by your touch by forcing grip of its handle.

All of my knives are nice so they don't go into the dishwasher at all. I handwash them. Only the butter knives go in the dishwasher.

They all go face-down to me. I got that from working in a restaurant kitchen and doing the dishroom. That and never leaving a knife in the water. I saw a guy cut his hand pretty badly on a knife that was in dirty water, he reached in and grabbed and cut his hand, had to get stitches and all. We all got a firm talking to and I got in the habit of those 2 things.

See, my thinking with the forks and spoons ends up is because I don't want any leftovers on the end of the utensil as the water/filth runs off (if they were eating part down).

I would keep knives up too due to the same philosophy, but that is a safety hazard. Of course, I do nothing extra to "clean" my knives since they are the opposite direction of my clean forks/spoons, but whatever.

Everything down...knives pointing down for obvious reasons, but I've actually been pierced by a fork with the tines up before.

It's also just easier to grab a handful of silverware handles when emptying the basket.

Does anyone else pre-sort the silverware when loading it (big forks in one compartment, knives in another, big spoons in another, etc)? I don't do it all the time, but sometimes that OCD kicks in and I have to rearrange the dirty dishes.

By that same logic, wouldn't one side/edge of your plates be "dirtier" too?
