In September, Ford Motor Co. (F) sold 6,429 Mustangs, a 32% year-over-year decline. Thousands of consumers actually showed up, but this was still lower than expected. In fact, year to date, Mustang volume sales have slipped 9% on a year-over-year basis.

In response to this news, Ford has closed its Flat Rock Assembly Plant in Michigan for one week. The time frame for the shutdown will be from October 10 – October 17. There are more than 3,000 workers at this plant, but they will all be paid despite the plant being closed. In addition to Mustangs, the plant also produces the Lincoln Continental.

That's because no one wants a 4 banger in a muscle car.

The car business is being propped up by lending practices now.

A slow down in sales among muscle cars like the Mustang could be a sign that the economy is slowing.

I like the look of the new mustangs, but ford is in serious need of an overhaul of the design and internal workings. I have several family members and friends who have owned them and had nothing but problems.

Camaro sales were up last month. I think this is temporary though.

People who would buy the lower end 4 banger Camaro or Mustang are younger females, and now they want crossover/minivan thingys like the Rav4, Equinox, or Escape.

Mustang drivers are typically trash that love cargo shorts and white Oakley's.

Sucks for them.

Do they even make 4 cylinder mustangs and camaros?

And the latest body style is the best the mustang has looked since the 60s.

ETA: Apparently they do. Fords 2.3 eco boost puts out 310 HP, the Camaro puts out 275. That's funny considering the 2005 GT (first retro body year) only put out 300.

More likely the case. The Mustang is still the top selling pony car so if it's hurting, that whole class will be too.

Camaro sales are up and actually outsold the Mustang recently, but overall I think Chevrolet is disappointed with Camaro sales. Chevrolet really worked hard and turned it into a very good sports car with excellent handling and driving dynamics...but in the process they also made it more expensive.

I'm thinking it's a slowdown of the economy combined with a preference for those dinky little crossovers.

If I'm honest, I think the car market could use more downward pressure on pricing. Hopefully this ends up being a correction in the automobile market and not a major downturn that puts a lot of people out of work.

That's not surprising given the economy, but I actually like the look of the new mustangs.
