JEFFERSON, La. -- A 5-year-old boy has died after a hit-and-run accident in Jefferson Parish, according to officials. The accident happened near the intersection of Jefferson Highway and Newman Avenue around 8:20 p.m. Louisiana State Police spokeswoman Trooper Melissa Matey said the driver fled the scene but was apprehended shortly after. Matey said the victim, who hasn't been identified, died in the hospital. Eyewitnesses said a female driver sped out of the gas station near the intersection, did not stop and hit the boy, who was trying to cross the street with his bicycle with his uncle by his side. According to those eyewitnesses, the driver hit the child and continued driving eastbound on Jefferson Highway. A Good Samaritan reportedly followed the driver to a nearby Walgreen's and cornered her in the parking lot until law enforcement officials could arrive. Neighbors say speeding is a huge problem in this stretch of Jefferson Highway. "My kids can't walk to school because they can't cross the highway because people speed, like, enormously bad on this street all the time," said Misty Hartfield, a Jefferson resident. "Not just in the mornings and not just late at night. It's all the time. They need more cops out here to make people slow down, so it's safe for our kids to walk to school." The driver has not been identified. There's been no word from police on what charges the driver is facing, or if driver impairment was a factor.
