Yes please. They're paid to play a sport, not to give their opinions on world matters.

So, the only people who should give opinions on world matters are those that are paid for it?

This is the dumbest thing I've read today.

You're using your platform, the internet. Why can't they use theirs?

So because he was overly competitive on the court and talked more shite than an elephants arse to other players then he is a piece of shite? I have read many times, from people close to him, in interviews and such that he quite often does a LOT of behind the scenes work for good causes. He isnt an attention hog (which is odd given how much of a ball hog he was ) and doest need your approval or praise to do the things he wants to do.

Being a shite talking asshat onthe basketball court does no translate into being a piece of shite of a person. It simply means he enjoyed the competitiveness of the game and enjoyed getting into players heads to make them play poorly by frustrating them. Its cerebral basketball. Beat your opponent in their head first and beating them on the court has already happened.

Richard Esquinas would like to have a word with you.

You must not have read my entire post. Notice I say they should shut up when talking about highly controversial topics.

If they want to promote world peace, or feeding the hungry, fine, I think everyone can get behind that.

But when you have these idiots wearing "stand up don't shoot" shirts and the like, they immediately out themselves as morons.

So you don't want to hear from them if they're likely to disagree with you?

No, but is it disrespectful for the audience you've built through your excellence at (sports/music/art/acting/etc.) to be bludgeoned over the head with your amateurish political opinions?

I'd say arguably yes. That doesn't apply to MJ, but might to the overall point that poster was trying to make.

So if those are acceptable, why not a message that says, "stop the violence"

Still playing it down the middle. Not picking one side over the other bc he doesn't want to piss off his fans.

At least Lebron chose a side (albeit the wrong one)

I hope he didn't speak out about personal responsibility. The last prominent black man to do that got framed for rape like thirty times.

If your principle doesn't change depending on the opinion, than I can respect that belief. My post mostly deals with the hypocrisy from many people who criticize athletes and entertainers who voice an opinion.

To many people, Michael Moore and Ben Affleck are idiots and irresponsible, but Clint Eastwood and Charles Barkley are experts. I tend to agree with the sentiment, but I'm not going to call out the credentials of Moore and Affleck while reposting and sharing opinions from Eastwood and Barkley.

If that's what you want to take away from my comments.

These people didn't amass their audience and platform by having intellectual thoughts and ideas. They achieved it by having a skill most people don't. They're free to say whatever they want, but If you want them to be your thought leaders go right ahead, I'd rather listen to intelligible people.

Even then, his part in the ESPY presentation was the most rational and logical IMO. If you want to criticize him for the whole speech, sure, but what actually came out of his mouth was good stuff.

quote:

JAMES: We all feel helpless and frustrated by the violence. We do. But that’s not acceptable. It’s time to look in the mirror and ask ourselves what are we doing to create change. It’s not about being a role model. It’s not about our responsibility to the tradition of activism.

I know tonight we’re honoring Muhammad Ali. The GOAT. But to do his legacy any justice, let’s use this moment as a call to action for all professional athletes to educate ourselves. It’s for these issues. Speak up. Use our influence. And renounce all violence.

And most importantly, go back to our communities, invest our time, our resources, help rebuild them, help strengthen them, help change them.

We all have to do better. Thank you.

Where did I argue that message is unacceptable?

This.

He has donated well over a million dollars to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Southeast Louisiana over the past few years and is one of the only people to not request publicity for it. It isn't limited to just here either. He donates all over the country.

Without reading this thread, people will either say it's not enough, because he has so much money or why hasn't he spoken up sooner.

Donating to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund doesn't mean anything. You act like all black people are pieces of shite, which couldn't be further from the truth. There are plenty of white pieces of shite out there as well.
