re: Federal agency confirms fire has broken out on blown-out gas well

I'm glad nobody got killed. I work way downstream in the process world and even for us at 2-300 psid, when you start seeing loss of control, it's a real bad day. I can't imagine what kind of pucker factor comes into play when 7-9000 psid starts getting out of hand.

You guys try to stay safe producing, and we'll try to stay safe processing.

Anything new on the status of the rig this morning? Fortunately the news isn't swarming this story as I would have expected.

Also, just hearsay, from what I have heard, they were in process of tripping out with the guns when they realized they had a kick. Incorrect shut-in practices seem to be a contributing factor here. Along with improper fill up.

I personally know the driller. They had 8 stands of 3 1/2 inch drill pipe left in the well. The well was taking proper fill whenever the kick occurred. Tried to shut the annular when the pipe started shooting out of the hole. Tried to sheer off, but wasn't enough weight below the rams.

would you frickers quit with this acronym shit!
Someone explain why a ram won't shut because "not enough weight".

Makes no damn sense.

You can't shear without enough weight below the shear rams. The ram works off pressure it will just pinch the pipe. It takes weight hanging below to actually make the pipe part.

SO,THE HANGING WEIGHT OF THE DRILL PIPE CAUSES IT TO SEPARATE AND FALL DOWN BELOW THE SHEARING RAMS?

Yes the weight of the drill string hence the term pipe light.
