Let me guess, y'all are running Symantec or McAfee antivirus? Almost every PC we get w/ the FBI virus has Symantec or McAfee on it. I don't know how these companies continue to sell their worthless products.

What is a good antivirus software for home use?

Damn. I was about to boot up my new laptop and install McAfee on it before I started surfing.

re: FBI locked up my computer at work
My 15 year old started messing around on my computer and picked this one up.

I got rid of it by rebooting in safe mode. Doing a system restore to the last update point then running a full security scan. Took care of it.

When I asked him about it he looked at me like a dog in one of those guilty dog videos.

Never had a problem with AVG. Even had one of my tech guys recommend it. Only time I know of it failing was a kid using Limewire who was downloading x-box games from a Ukrainian server and got some kind of bug that they had to wipe his hard drive to get rid of.

I think Avast and Kapersky get pretty good marks, too.

Yes, AFTER you have someone check hard drives so you can convict him with a printout.

One of my employees called me this morning to tell me our main computer is locked up. The bottom of screen says the FBI needs 300 dollars to turn it back on. Something seems fishy here what say the OT.
let google be ur friend - if you can read and follow instructions - you can take it off without laying $$ to a computer repair person.

Just as a heads up, the phone calls from the Dept of Justice saying you are severely delinquent on a debt and you need to pay them 1500 dollars immediately to settle and avoid an arrest warrant is a scam too.

re: FBI locked up my computer at work
That's 100% a scam. My dad had the same thing and my mom accused him of looking at porn and got in trouble. It's a bit of a bitch to remove. But reboot in safe mode and Google instructions on removal. It took me about 20 minutes but I'm An IT guy. Anyhoo point is its not really the FBI and is a malware scam to get you to pay them.
