Is this one of the sure fire ways to get ahead in corporate America?

From my experience and the type of people I've seen get promoted being an engineer for 15+ years, it surely isn't based on skill, hard work, and overall experience.

Yup, a good attitude will outdo good performance nine times out of ten. But it often develops into a drinking habit from faking happiness too long.

Those people will level out quickly. If you talk to CEOs, most will tell you to grind in the field to learn what your business actually does. There is no substitute for experience.

Getting that next position isn't always about what you know how to do. It's about having the attitude to be the type of person that is going to do what it takes to figure out what has to be done.

I don't think that's apples to apples what your talking about, but it can often seem someone is not fit for a job (i.e. lacks experience). But the reality is, many people who are "fit" for the job don't always have that go get em attitude. So someone will step in and say they'll get it done even if they don't fully have the skill yet. I consider that faking it until you make it and don't necessarily look down upon it. Now there is certainly some crashing and burning along the way.

Honestly, that's how most of life is.

We're only on this earth for so long, and it's not like you can be an expert in everything, so just kinda act like you know what you're doing and don't get people killed/fired and you're fine.

I'm the head of a multi-national business conglomerate... I have no idea what the frick I'm doing. I don't even know what product we make.

I just walk around all day with my power suit on bossing people around.

A man of your stature is far too important to be bothered with minutia details, you're a big picture guy.

Of course it is a means to an end. We all do it, from dating to promotions.

Ever read resumes while filling open positions? Holy shite, talk about incredible reading. No one is real.

Going on 16 years of 'faking it' as an EE and now in a position that doesn't require as much technical detail so I'm home free. Hell, I even cheated to get my way thru college.

Outside of this site I'm just your like able good ol' boy that gets along with everyone and doesn't cause riffs or get overly opinionated on topics. That alone has gotten me where I'm at and being in a stable enough environment to not get laid off.

I got a job as a Petroleum Engineer right out of college this past May because I busted my arse and cold called 150-200 companies, drove all around Louisiana and East Texas knocking on doors. Not because of connections or faking it. Faking it could be true in a BS job.

I had to fake being a mediocre poster on here for about 8 years before my mediocrity finally got wide recognition.
