That's a win on that detail.

That's a really long winded way to say background.

Practically speaking, I wonder how far into the launch that the shuttle is immune to all attack given that they clear a square of airspace in front of it.
25-30 seconds? If even that long?

I assume they have to prepare for aborted launches. Could be a major part of why the fighter jets are there.

For what? Escort? Air space around Kennedy is clear, and those jets are pretty far away from the shuttle.
There are two main abort stages for this part. Either abort back to Kennedy, or abort to a designated runway in Europe. I believe the typical emergency site was in Spain.
Don't think those fighters are going to be able to make it there in time to escort them in.
Nah, I think those are mostly post 9-11 fighters that are there for the same reason why you see an aviation military presence for pretty much all major sporting events: on site response to a terrorist attack in the form of a hijacked airliner

I didn't know how fast an aborting shuttle gets back to land. Was just a guess.
Watched a pretty cool Ted talk or something about the shuttle reentry the other night. Good shite.

I was just reading on the abort back to Kennedy.
Shits crazy and is very likely to fail with all of the crap they have to pull very precisely.
NASA apparently wanted to test it out on the first manned shuttle mission.
Commander shut it down with the comment: Let's not practice Russian roulette.

I would guess the F15 is not there for protection during the actual launch, but for protection prior to the launch.

Same here. I went to one, got tickets to go out on the causeway to watch the launch but they postponed it. It was a resupply mission to the ISS so there was a very small launch window. They called off the launch because of crosswinds at the landing sites in case of an aborted launch. The next day we hung out in Titusville hoping to see the launch from there but it was postponed again.
I did see a night launch from all the way across the state near Tampa.
