F-14 Tomcat Vs FA/18E/F Super Hornet

I recently met a Navy Captain who flew both aircraft. He stated that the Tomcat was sexy, fast, and dangerous but, the Super Hornet was a better multi-role platform.
Can't understand why the Navy couldn't upgrade the Tomcat. Thoughts from knowledgeable people?

1. Tomcat is an air superiority platform first and foremost. We've realized we can blow shite out of the sky with weapons tech and air logistics and don't need the tomcats abilities against brown people in the sand
2. MIC
2. MIC

Why bother if you've already got a perfectly good Super Hornet platform that costs less to operate?

Why bother when they already have the Hornet? The Tomcat is an old aircraft. You've been watching too much Top Gun.

The F-14 was a 1970's era fighter. very cool, but machines wear out. Its very different for a fighter vs say a B-52 due to G loading stress on the airframe.

From what I was told the movie Top Gun revealed top-secret information on the F-14 to the point that they had to scrap the whole program.

Maverick and Goose were those secrets. Once word got out that goose died, we'd be easy targets. F14 had to go.

I remember the first time I was up close to an F-14 I couldn't believe how big the damn thing was

That opening battle with the Mig when they went inverted was a big reveal

Having been in the Navy, if you are allocated money then you have to spend all of it or your budget will be cut next year.

It went below the hard deck and broke a major rule of engagement.

The F-14 was a maintenance headache, but it carried the Phoenix air to air missile which was very fast, over Mach 5 IIRC.
The FA-18 excels at air to air combat and is also serves as a ground attack platform. It is far cheaper and easier to keep in the air than the Tomcat.
The F-35 was designed to replace planes like the F-16 and the FA-18. Similar performance, plus stealth technology. The Navy prefers twin engine aircraft though, so I dunno.
