The East Baton Rouge Parish Metro Council voted 8-3 Wednesday to let bars open and sell alcohol between the hours of 11 a.m. and midnight on Sundays. Grocery stores and package liquor stores will be permitted to sell without restrictions on Sundays.

Metro Council members Ronnie Edwards, Tara Wicker and Mike Walker voted against the measure. Those voting in favor were Trae Welch, Ulysses “Bones” Addison, Chandler Loupe, Scott Wilson, C. Denise Marcelle, Joel Boé, Alison Gary and Rodney “Smokie” Bourgeois.

Councilman Donna Collins-Lewis was not present for the vote.

Addison opened the Wednesday’s Metro Council meeting by deleting his separate proposal to extend bar hours until 4 a.m. on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

He said the Parish Attorney’s Office asked him to delete the item.

Joseph Scott, assistant parish attorney, said he had no comment.

[PUSSY]

The cost of the proposed permit would have been $40,000.

[HOW DOES 6 MORE HOURS OF BARS BEING OPEN A WEEK ADD UP TO 40k IN COST/YEAR?]

Addison said he sponsored the item because the permit fees would have funded additional enforcement positions in the Alcoholic Beverage Control office, while the high cost would have prevented most bars from being able to participate.

I've got a friends in NOLA that don't get the BR bar scene at all. If anything you would think they would want bars to be open at 4am

The amendment by the EBR Metro Council passed by a vote of 8 to 3.

Mike Walker was one of the nays. I thought this guy was for small, local businesses?

Talk about a strange coalition of polar opposites speaking against the measure: a gentleman from the Nation of Islam and an older lady who stated over and over again that consumption of alcohol is against Christian values. Both spoke of faith-based morals. . .yet I couldn't imagine either one sitting next to each other and having any conversation about their respective faiths.

All in all, a great day for BR, particularly for us non-natives who have (willingly or unwillingly) stayed in BR after graduating from LSU and Southern.

I know it's a moot point now, but isn't there already enough of the ABC tinted out trailblazers cruising around Tigerland handing out MIP's already?
