Experiences with Metoprolol? (Beta Blockers)
Posted by Gr8t8s on 5/12/15 at 12:22 pm00
Originally was diagnosed with Anxiety, but went to a cardiologist and they say that I have benign Paroxysmal Supraventricular Tachycardia. Prescribed a very low dosage of this Metoprolol.....wondering what to expect....
They seem to think the Tachycardia causes the anxiety feelings and not the other way around. My general doc thinks it's the opposite.

I've never understood MY Anxiety diagnosis, though. I literally have nothing to cause that much stress. Great family, love my work (self-employed), do well, get out a lot, etc.

Coincidence maybe? Not a very common side effect.
The big ones for young men are impotence and depression, although low dose is unlikely to cause anything appreciable.
If it does become an issue, tell your cardiologist and they can usually switch you to something like cardizem.

It will make you tired for the first few days.

oh mr. "it's a wonderful life". Maybe everyones family isn't as perfect as yours. Maybe they have a sickness. Maybe some people have to work for a living, and maybe some people are just poor. Damn

Cool story bro. Not everyone shares the same life experiences as you.

Get your testosterone checked. No joke.
I've run into more than one person that started having anxiety issues out of the blue. In most cases these were older men that had never had anxiety issues in their life.
Checked the testosterone and found out it was low.
Just a heads up...

Man i have the same diagnosis and symptoms that you have, and I get the strange anxiety issues also. It's weird because sometimes I don't know if the anxiety is making my heart race or my heart is racing then I get anxiety ha. The heart palpitations keep me up at night to and as soon as I get up for a minute they go away. Do you ever get the feeling when you are starting to fall asleep that you can't catch your breath I get that one at night also. Doctor doesn't know if my SVT from when I was a kid is back or if it is something else causing my regular fast heartbeat. The anxiety attacks have put me I n the emergency room multiple times. Like you I have no visible reasons for anxiety. The metoprolol can suck. It is kind of an aggressive medicine and I could feel the second it would go into effect and it made me feel like crap. They switched to nadolol because it is much more subtle. I have been living with these symptoms for 3 years now and believe me sometimes it still sucks but you eventually adjust.

Yes! Happens to me all the time. Oddly though my symptoms get much worse during the winter months. Once summer hits my symptoms almost completely go away.

I not sure if mine changes by season but at night my anxiety goes way up. They tested my Ph, my testosterone, my blood sugar, cardiac enzymes, thyroid and every other test you can think of. They couldn't ever give me a for sure answer besides it acts like the SVT I had as a child but my ekg's never showed that. I have talked to people who like metoprolol so you might be good it just didn't work for me. I still get little twinges that start in my chest and feel like they go up my neck and sometimes i get these quick sharp pains in my chest or shoulders and arms. They go away quickly and have been happening for 3 years now. Doctors aren't sure if they are just anxiety(which I don't understand because I don't worry about much) or some other issue. I glad you got a diagnosis and can deal with what you have.

We will see. I haven't started taking it just yet. I've been dealing with the anxiety for about three years now. It just kind of showed up out of nowhere. Hopefully this will help

I had a mitral valve replaced (with carbon fiber valve) about 7 years ago and take Metoprolol (25 mg split in half with first half taken in morning and other half at night).
Have taken it for 7 years to slow my heart down and lower BP. It does both of those things very well and makes me tired - go to sleep within 2-5 minutes every night and sleep at least 8 hours. I don't like that, but put up with it. MY BP runs about 105/68 most days, which is likely why I stay tired.
Beta blockers are strong drugs. Probably have multiple side effects.
