I'm about to buy a new truck and there's some really good deals to be had on what I want in Texas. The trip would save me about $4k vs buying local, and I'd have to compromise a little on some options I want.

Is it worth a 4 hour road trip? What's involved with buying a vehicle from out of state? Do they just mail you a Texas plate and registration when it comes in and then you go to a LA DMV to get Louisiana stuff? Do they mail you all Louisiana stuff? Any hidden taxes or fees there I need to know about?

You will pay the taxes for where you live and get a La plate. They know the routine

I flew to Dallas and drove truck home

You will pay taxes and register it in your home state. Pay tax according to your address

I bought a used Yukon from Dallas that had 17k miles on it but was in perfect condition, so I had a friend go look at it, then we did the paperwork via email and fax. I negotiated for the dealership to pay for it to be shipped to my house. Was pretty cool watching an 18-wheeler come to come house to deliver a car. And yeah, you'll pay tt&l to whatever state you live in, but your buying options become more plentiful by opening up your search to other states. Worked out well for me.

That's the way the quote read. Figured it had to be more complicated than that. Are the LA taxes a separate transaction on top of Texas sales tax?

It's really not.

Just bring all paperwork from dealership to DMV, pay sales tax, walk out with registration and plate

Yes it's worth the 4 hour trip, especially for $4k in savings.

Sweet. The delivery fees are cheaper than I was expecting too. $600 to get one hauled to my door step from Fort Worth. Amazing how much easier those guys in Texas are to deal with.

You will pay applicable city/parish/state taxes based on your residence. Where you buy the vehicle is irrelevant.

Make sure you factor in the LA sales tax bc you will pay that at the DMV to get your plate. Don't let the schmuck sellingnyou the car tell you differently

They also know you'll be anchored when you get there and afraid to walk. Don't be a bitch and walk out as soon as they start hedging and you'll be fine.

I just did this on Monday. I flew to Little Rock where the dealer picked me up and drove me to thhe dealership in Bryant, AR. I got there at 10:30, drove two vehicles to make sure the one I had put a deposit on checked out, and was driving home at noon. I already had my financing and we had agreed on the price via email, 13k off MRSP for a 2016 GMC 2500 gasser. I think I signed two documents and was done. It was the easiest car buying experience in my life. If you are looking at a GMC, definitely look at Everett GMC near Little Rock and Laura GMC near St. Louis. They are the top volume GMC dealerships in the country and have crazy deals.

Just bought a car out of Dallas a month ago. Negotiated over email, got the offer sheet and their assurance that there would be no BS fees when I got there. Flew in to Dallas for $150ish, salesman picked me up at the airport, did the deal and drove it home. Paid La. taxes only, and my license plate just arrived at DMV. Easy transaction.

I'm not going anywhere without a signed quote. It's going to cost me a day off work and I'd go postal if I wasted that.

I bought a new car in Mobile last year and it was a great experience. I went to the DMV here and paid all fee's and taxes. Easy and def worth it.

Seconded, they are across the river in Collinsville, IL. They're the Number Two GMC dealership in the nation. I've bought there via the Internet and had trucks delivered and they were cheap, professional and straight-up.

They also have Buicks, for whatever that's worth.

OP, if you find a comparable vehicle locally, you may be able to get the dealer to match the price. I have heard some people were able to save themselves the drive by simply emailing the Internet sales guy at a local dealership showing the out of state comp and having the price matched...
