I was a good to great 800 meter and miler back in the day, I took an academic scholarship in lieu of an athletic scholarship, so I never ran in college.

MY niece inherited the family genes. At 12, she posted a 1:05 400m in her first race. This week's meet was the first I attended.

Niece won her 400m heat but dropped 8 seconds off her PB. She fricked up majorly in the 800 -- which should be her race -- and finished second to last and wasn't even gassed. She was just out there running with her friends.

My father, brother and I were all sitting in the stands. PISSED. WE all ran. We know what it takes to win, and she has the raw talent. She just DOESN'T know how to run competitively.

I know the coach. We played football together. He's never ran a track even in his life. I;m tempted to volunteer as a coach.

Anyone had any experience with it?

It sounds like you're trying to relive your glory days. Let it go man. Let it go.

You don't volunteer for the reason you've cited.

Know one gives a poop about girls track. The fact you got upset over a girls track meet is sad.

Yes. And the first rule is that it is about the kids having fun. If they decide they want to be serious and pursue scholarships you can push a little more because they want to be pushed. But they have to make those decisions.

Boosie volunteered as a coach awhile back. I think he has to tell all his neighbors now of his presence.

He may be able to help in this thread

My glory days are long passed. I'm 50lbs heavier than the 150 I ran at it (and 18 years gone from) in those days, But I know what it takes to train to win.

I could teach her so much, and it irritates me the way the team is coached.

Sounds like she may need her arse kicked.

I coached my neighbors son's shot put, discus and javelin squad. We went from an average 7th place finish to an average 5.3rd place finish.

I get being proud of YOUR kid but bragging about "MY niece" is just sad

Seems like she wants to concentrate on the 400 and not have anything to do with the 800.

Congrats. She's athletic AND smart. What's the problem?

I'll have you know I passed the background check to work at a Catholic school.

Barely.

Unless you want her to get made fun of isn't this a good thing?

If you want to help her, become her personal trainer. If you want to help the team, volunteer to coach. If you have the time, go for it.

I think the problem is with your niece and her father, not the coach. You need to have a stern lecture with them about having a competitive spirit and the proper running form.

A 65 sec 400 is fricking nuts for a 12-year-old. I remember when I was in high school 6-7 years ago we had to run 7 400's in less than 60 secs at practice and just doing that sucked.

I think the fastest 400 I ever ran competitively was like a 55. Granted I was a sprinter and ran a 19 sec 200.

Tell her to keep at it.

At 12,

this may be the biggest issue. She may not have the competitive want to run a 800 right now.

Like someone else said a 1:05 at 12 is awesome. My PR in the 400 was just barely sub 52. and that was as high school senior. That being said just because she ran 400 well doesn't always translate to the 800.

Ive always known the 800 as being a mind over matter race in that you try to kill it on your first lap and find a way on your second. Maybe she doesn't have that yet?

Nothing wrong with focusing on the Open 4 and 4x4 relay. That final event can be the most exciting when a meet is on the line.

But also instead of going all "well im a runner and do this" as a volunteer coach. Just try to talk to her help her get in the right mindset outside of practice. Cause from the sounds of it its a mental issue with the running competitive and not a talent issue

Honestly I think the decision here depends on whether your niece is really into it and really wants to get better. Offer your advice and help, and if she's serious, she'll take it.
