Four frickin sounds. Putin, pudding, putt, and uniform, all different.

Using it in words like "urn" and "gurney" also produces a different sound when paired with the 'r' - so really more like 4.5 or 5 sounds.

There are 8 standard phonograms that feature the letter U, with even more sounds-

AU can be 6 different sounds in fault, sauce, gauge, sauerkraut, chauffeur, or aura.

AUGH- can be 2, as in laugh or caught

BU- as in build; if the B and U are pronounced separately, it does not apply-- see butane.

UR - like fur

GU- as in penguin

OUGH- 6 different sounds-- cough, plough, rough, dough, though, or bought.

OU- 5 different sounds- soul, you, mouse, touch, would

QU- 1 sound- as in quit.

UI- 3 sounds- fruit, guide, suite

U- 5 sounds - jug, statue, put, number, and june.
