Had a blow dryer and iron trip the circuit. Reset it at the breaker and one of the GFI outlets began smoking. I threw the breaker at the box to turn it off.

Did the outlet go bad and need replacing?

It's probably 25 years old.

The outlet went bad.

Yes do not use. A new one is only $15. you can even get them with night lights or USB plugs now.

You made it go bad, if you change it to new and do the same you might have the same result.

must have been a damn good throw. How far was the throw if you don't mind me asking?

Follow Napoleon's advice.

I had a GFCI stop working. Replaced it and found that apparently, a wire had come loose and melted some of the plastic. Thankfully, it didn't cause any problems except ending the life of the outlet itself.

If it's smoking, there is something wrong. Go spend a few bucks and replace it.

BTW, most hair dryers can basically blow a fuse by themselves. You might want to not use a hair dryer and iron at the same time.

Time to replace it, although that would seem to be obvious.

Be sure to flip the appropriate circuit breaker before messing with it, although that would seem to be obvious.

Check the wiring as best you're able to get to for signs of damage to be sure the wiring isn't faulty too, although that would probably seem to be obvious.

Change it out. GFCI's are meant to protect you. They trip when the outgoing and incoming current is 3-6 mA different.

Had an old one shoot sparks at me. When I replaced it, the old one fell apart as I removed it. Easy replacement.

Thanks everyone. I'll inspect everything tomorrow and change it if I can find anything open.

I threw that breaker 350 feet.

If I'm not mistaken code calls for the GFI's to be 15amp and the blow dryer and iron is a dance we do between my wife and daughter across two bathrooms. Almost every Sunday they battle it out and I usually end up having to reset the breaker at the box.
