Just drove down staring/Essen 30 minutes ago. I saw exactly what the Op is referring to, cars pulling into what used to be a turning lane but is now incoming traffic. It was causing a cluster Frick. Also 2 cops were radaring on the staring side.

Amen. I was coming South on Essen last week just past OLOL. There was a car coming right at me, driver waving her hands like "WHY YOU IN MY LANE?" She then realized she was in MY lane and she had a look of WTFness that I could empathize with. It's poorly marked/warned/barricaded.
SKEERY.

I don't feel safe accessing my mailbox on Stanford. It's 40 mph and there's not a median

How do you validate that statement? He's a polarizing mofo for sure but he's not dumb by usual quantitative measures. Especially considering his peers in the MC.

I don't agree with this. The new double yellow lines are clearly painted on Essen. Drivers seem to not understand that the double yellow lines mean that traffic is coming the other way on the other side, but that isn't an exclusive to Essen problem.

Don't know about killed but wrecks WILL happen.

I saw 2 cars yesterday that thought they were in the old turn lane for Piccadilly. They had no clue that they were in the direct lane of oncoming traffic.

Absent the dedicated turn lane, you have folks that will just stop and back up traffic while waiting for THREE lanes of traffic to magically open up during normal rush hours so they can turn left.

Complacency is the killer here. I'm not quite 40 and I've been driving that road over 20 yrs. There are many like me on Essen. Habit and mind off task here warrant EXTRA notifications. This chick almost hit me head -on at 35-40mph. It could happen to ANYONE.

your opinion is such crap that i don't even know where to begin destroying it.

they have to close the outside lane to work, leaving you with 4 lanes to use. providing 2 lanes each way is by far the best option to keep traffic moving. if you want the turn lane back, one of the directions of essen would have to be one lane. imagine the outcry and internet meltdowns from all the armchair traffic engineers if they took essen down to one lane.

not only that, there's a big arse double yellow stripe separating the traffic. if you and 3 other bad drivers cross the big arse double yellow stripe, i guess that's just the contractor's fault.

first they complain about how bad traffic is on essen, then when they begin widening it, they complain about that too. they don't like traffic, but they don't want it fixed. and this particular complaint is extra mind-boggling because there is literally no other logical way to stripe the 4 lanes. they're complaining about an unavoidable condition on the way to having the wider road they want.

I know, I know!

If it is any consolation, I think "essen" means 'eat' in German.

Maybe if people like you got off Tigerdropping and looked out at the real world you would see that there are a large number of motorists that do not notice the double yellow line. Just because you put something there doesn't make it easily noticeable to those who are used to being in the area.

People are busy trying to figure out where they can make a left in what was once a turning lane. Add this to the already clusterfrick that people like you designed in Essen lane to begin with and its a disaster. If you are traveling north everything looks normal. But I guess I'm supposed to remember that Essen is 3 lanes and not make the same path I have made hundreds of times. Am I in the wrong for crossing a double yellow line yes.

Does that make it easy for drivers to see that the is now no turning lane? NO! The driver is looking UP AND LEFT not DOWN.

I challenge you to spend some of your wasted time and drive out there and park in Piccadilly and watch what is going on in the real world instead of telling people their opinions are crap from behind a computer. Maybe a fricking light bulb will go off and you can see how its an issue.

Where did I complain about the progress? Im not even disputing that its not the drivers fault. I said the way its setup someone is going to get killed or seriously injured. I stand by that. Its only a matter of time.

If THREE people do it its not an issue. If its 3 people in a matter of 10 min then it JUST MAY BE AN ISSUE.

First off, let me just say you shouldn't really go down Essen under any circumstances unless you absolutely need to.

Okay, the next thing is this...I'm a firm believer in a construction method that can shut down the road for a period of time which allows the contractor to do all his work in that time fram as opposed to keeping the road opening and constructing the improvements at a snail's pace.

But nooooo, that can't be done because there would be so much bitching and moaning. And maybe not from you or people reading the thread, but there would be the vocal minority wetting their diapers because the city/parish or state closed down the most congested road in the city to improve it.

I guess this is more of a general gripe more than anything...I wish this state would let contractors just shut down a road, let them work in the zone for a X amount of time and incentivize him to finish, and adequately provide detours to motirsts in the meantime. Projects would get done much quicker and with higher quality results.

i guess we just need to do away with stripes on the road since no one looks at them anymore.

just look at the crap you're saying and have some accountability. you're trying to justify that if you would have been in the wrong in an accident, it wouldn't have been your fault b/c it changed and you're not used to it even though it's striped and signed correctly.

Nope.

BTW My posts per year are only a little higher than your own.

yes no need to notify people that something that has been a certain way for 20 plus years has changed overnight.. NAHHHH that would make too much sense. Lets just throw some paint down and let the people figure it out while an 18 wheeler coming barreling at them head on.
