Sucks for me. I'm in the middle of buying a new house. Both my wife and I were exposed to the hack.

That was some language that was in a previous Terms of Use document. They provided an update that clearly states that you do not surrender those rights by signing up. I made sure of that before I signed up.

For a year, I think. Unfortunately, your information is forever out there. Someone could sit on that info for 10 years, then pull the trigger.

is this a waste of time and potentially more problematic?

Equifax is under a ton of scrutiny right now. They will spend the money to beef up their security and it will hit their pretty massive 30% profit margins. After a few managers and a possible CEO firing and major firewall upgrades Equifax might be the most secure data company on the market after new data security policies are implemented.

I use Equifax Complete Premier Plan.

IMO that won't hold up in court.

I'm not bothering with Equifax. I'm already signed up for LifeLock's highest tier. I'm also signed up for the free MyIDCare service that OPM paid for after they were hacked.

They don't even have a very commonly used "I agree to terms of service" check box? I did it Monday and I'm pretty sure that wasn't how it was set up at all, in fact it was purporting to just tell you if you were part of the breach and instead of telling you that it said "you're enrolled as of date" It was most certainly not obvious I was enrolling in something when I entered my information on Monday.

According to this article there is an interim screen with an enroll button after you check to see if you were breached.

I basically went from the check to see if we screwed you screen to the "Thank you you're enrolled screen". I never actually enrolled by clicking an enroll button even though they seem to think I did. This is going to be too big of a frick up affecting too many people for them to hide behind questionably acquired implied consent.

im not an insurance person but I wonder when our car insurance 6 month renewal is coming up, and if/when they check our credit and see a freeze.. will they drop us?

probably something we should speak to our agents about.

When did I consent to this?

You didn’t. Shame, but that’s the reality. It was likely hidden in the fine print of the first checking account you tried to open or when you inquired about buying a car but let’s be honest – it isn’t consensual regardless. You have no choice because it is pretty much impossible to actually live so off the grid you’ve never had any credit history. If someone used the same leverage to pressure you into giving them sex instead of your SSN it would be considered rape. Will this hold up in court? Almost definitely not. So you’re stuck with the rest of us.

reddit is a good read..i'm still going through it.

So you may have to pay if you unfreeze it in the near future.

And the other two still cost $10.

From what I've heard the price differs by state but I could be wrong. When I froze my credit earlier this year Equifax was free while Experian and Transunion were $10. To do a temporary thaw Equifax was again free and Experian and Transunion were $8. It does suck that you have to pay for something like this though.

If you sign up, they start charging you at the one year mark and you forfeit your rights to go after them for losses.

Bad move. I decided to freeze my credit and wait it out.

Unfortunately I am mid purchase on a piece of property so we will see how that pans out....

3) Clarification Regarding Automatic Sign-Up to TrustedID Premier
We are not requesting consumers’ credit card information when they sign up for the free credit file monitoring and identity theft protection we are offering to all U.S. consumers. Consumers who sign up for TrustedID Premier will not be automatically enrolled or charged after the conclusion of the complimentary year of TrustedID Premier.

2) No Waiver Of Rights For This Cyber Security Incident
In response to consumer inquiries, we have made it clear that the arbitration clause and class action waiver included in the Equifax and TrustedID Premier terms of use does not apply to this cybersecurity incident.
