Exxon blew up earlier that day.

LINK

What a dream team.

George Sells looking exactly like he always looked. There's a young Phil Rainier and Steve Schneider's in the Dome. Clarence Buggs doing sports. And the GOAT Mike Gharam doing weather.

My old riends dad drove through that tunnel and started the explosion.

He still collects a few grand a month settlement and buys drugs and has never worked in his life. Pathetic.

My mom was working at Exxon at the time. It was pretty nuts.

The guy who started the explosion is no longer living. Heard a gruesome story last week from someone who had to extract what was left of him from the truck.

At least, the guy suspected. Nothing definitive.

I know that. He drove through the tunnel and was killed.

Ah, thought the second line was about the guy, not the friend.

Spent half a day wednesday doing the calculations in relation to the pressure on the pipeline that exploded. Crazy how far the industry has come.

It pretty fortunate.. if that's the right word.. that it was Christmas Eve. Any regular day and there's probably many more killed.

Don't know the BR site at all. Had the opportunity to talk with someone who lived through and handled logistics during and after that crisis. Makes me pay that I will never be involved in such a situation. 26 years later he could hardly talk about it without having lots of emotion for guys he never really knew.

Wish we could see more clips like this, kinda like seeing old newspapers. I can think of so many things I'd want to go back and watch the news report on.

That report had it all. Exxon blowing up, cold temps, Dick Cheney, Saints blowing out the Colts

the explosion

As I recall, they actually determined that there were two explosions. The first was apparently caused by static electricity from a truck (BR set a local record at that time for most consecutive hours below freezing). This explosion then apparently set off the larger, second explosion that was felt between New Roads and Prairieville. And yes, the rumors that it produced a (temporary) mushroom cloud over the City of Baton Rouge are true.

I would guess the catalytic converter or simply diesel engine caused the initial spark needed. Mind you, not saying static didn't cause it.

The mushroom cloud and the smoke trail that followed are things I won't forget. Shell in norco had it's explosion a few years before, so there was some sense of, "did that just happen here?" amongst people familiar. Went to New Orleans for Christmas plans, and the smoke plume drifted the entire way IIRC.
