Emotions in modern society

I find it absolutely fascinating that today's society is about giving into emotions whatever they may be. You look at the traditional religions and philosophies, Christianity, Buddhism, Stoicism, Epicurianism, they're all about self control and becoming at peace with the world through adversity. Pretty disturbing how people give into it today.

It's because we are too comfortable.
Plain and simple.
We have, at our fingertips, access to damn near everything.
If you want entertainment, it is literally at your fingertips, in myriad forms.
If you want food, whatever the type, it is only a short ride away, and for cheap.
We have access to the sum total of all the worlds knowledge, not to mention damn near all the worlds naked women, at the click of a button.
The soldiers who fought in the most brutal wars of the last century are dead or dying.
Those who suffered the hardships of the depression, the starvation, are dead or dying.
We haven't had it hard enough. We've had it easy, by comparison.
We've gotten soft. Because our forbears suffered we have been able to be soft. And we should thank them for it. Because the gravy train we are all on will end.
Maybe it won't for us. Maybe our children even ride it for a while.
But the little ones today, they'll suffer for it. Like the generations before they'll pay, in blood, to earn comfort once again.
Yet where the dust settles when the next conflict is done is unsure.
So today, let's celebrate football. A chance to escape the realities of the bigger picture and enjoy the battles on the gridiron while we may.

Women "give into it" a lot more these days because of birth control.

Epictetus had it all figured out 2000 years ago. Incredible really when you think about it. Human nature doesn't change. Technology changes, but we stay the same.

I laugh when people get frustrated

I've been doing a lot of reading on stoicism recently. Initial anger and frustration are inevitable. But if you have a strong will, you can channel and dissect your feelings into a practicum that should bring peace of mind. You can't deny your true feelings but you lose when you can't control them.
I honestly am someone whose prone to depression and has a temper. But I've worked at turning my thought process from the destructive to the productive. I can't lie that nothing negative ever slips through but discipline and determination to master myself has helped.

This has been a guiding principle of mine for 35 years and I think is a key to avoiding sabotaging your life.

Yep. It wasn't but a generation or two ago that it was common for a 12 year old girl to slaughter an animal that the family raised to eat.

It's amazing how many poeple cannot see this. They act like 'Gen X' and 'Gen Y' have totally different DNA and so forth.

I'm going to get emotional right now. Back in a few.

Yes maybe for what you see in media, but this does not hold true in Corporate America. In the modern workplace there is no place for negative emotions...or you are dinged for it. The most successful people are the ones that emote cheer and positivity at all times.
It becomes nauseating...plastering a smile on my face as enter the building in the am.
