Eating "gluten-free" when there's no medical need to do so won't boost your heart health -- and might even harm it, a new study warns.
Gluten-free diets have soared in popularity in recent years. But, shunning gluten has no heart benefits for people without celiac disease, and it may mean consuming a diet lacking heart-healthy whole grains, according to the quarter-century study.
"For the vast majority of people who can tolerate it, restricting gluten to improve your overall health is likely not to be a beneficial strategy," said study leader Dr. Andrew Chan.
Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye and barley. People with celiac disease -- less than 1 percent of the U.S. population -- have an immune system reaction when they eat gluten, triggering inflammation and intestinal damage. They also have an increased risk of heart disease, but that declines after they begin eating a gluten-free diet, according to background information in the study.

So, the researchers then adjusted their findings for intake of refined grains. "It appeared that those individuals who consumed the lowest levels of dietary gluten had a 15 percent higher risk of heart disease," Chan said.

Yes....unless they have Celiac disease.

Yeah gluten-free foods came out for people with Celiac's. Then the grocery stores started putting it in the "expensive" section next to organic or whole grain options. People began associating gluten-free with those other buzzwords and a hysteria was built. It really is kind of a strange phenomena.

No gluten free is a valid diet backed up by science. I used to get migraines and have anxiety all the time until I cut gluten out of my diet. I'm like 100% healthier now. It just pisses me off when somebody invites me to dinner and there aren't any gluten free options

Yeah, "gluten" sounds like "glutton", so people were fooled into thinking it contributed to making them fat. In reality, it was soft drinks and white bread making them fat the whole time.

It proves how stupid people are. They lap up Chipotle's bland (and often contaminated) food because it's non-GMO.

Who gives a shite what whiney, 'hey look at me' SJWs eat or don't eat.

The problem is how the grains are processed today.
If they were processed and made like in Ancient Rome times. Things wouldn't be as bad.

i'm not getting into this thread further than this post.
i'm so sick of hearing people bitch about the GF thing. many diabetics also have GF insensitivity and/or celiacs.
can't help the type 1. can't help having to go gf. i've never ever ever ever felt better in my entire life once i stopped eating gluten. i'll still have small amount of ancients, etc.

The American Diabetes Association recommends screening children for celiac disease shortly after the diagnosis of type 1 diabetes. Unexplained nutrient deficiencies and poor blood glucose control might be signs to have evaluated. Celiac disease damages the intestine and affects nutrient absorption, sometimes without causing symptoms.

I swear a few weeks ago at the store I saw a pickle jar that said "gluten free!" on the label. I was like no shite?

Its a garbage protein. If you can break it down it's not that terrible for the average person, but a gluten free diet is obviously better for overall health.
Moderation. It covers just about every aspect of human activity.
