Population growth rates have declined across the board since the 1960s.

The carrying capacity of a location changes with technology.

Don't worry about it. It looks like the religion of peace and love is trying to start a new world war. Maybe that will take out half of a generation.

Researchers determined that if fat Americans would eat 1/3 less calories than presently consumed, the whole universe could sustain life for 1.6 earths.

As others have said, birth rates are consistently dropping in developed nations.

Plenty of headlines lately regarding close to half of US produce is thrown away.

If more people and communities advocated gardening and composting, we could dramatically increase food production and reduce organic waste.

Bottom line, as long as there's enough chicken to allow fast food "chicken fries" we are ok.

It probably goes without saying that we'll likely have to go vegetarian at some point if we don't do anything to mitigate these population concerns. That's why I'll eat the heck out of steak while I can

This is precisely why GMO's were an important revelation in the food and farming industry. Without them, we could never feed the population in this planet

Maybe we shouldn't subsidize the breeding of people who couldn't make it on their own then.

The sad thing is, the people on this earth with higher education and income, are having fewer kids. And the majority of the population growth in the next 30 years will come from illiterate subsistence farmers in India and Africa.

And this, coming into a world where manual labor is being replaced by robots. There will be basically no jobs for about half of the next 2 billion people born.

That's 1 billion Muslims, Africans, and poor Indians that will have no role in the world, and will lack the physical environment and resources to provide for themselves.

Yeah. That's gonna turn out well.

I suppose if you don't like this planet you are free to move to another.

Super bug will decimate a large portion of the population before critical mass. Just like over.populating animals eventually get taken out by disease, so too the human race. Mother Nature will always win.

Mother nature is going to take care of this shortly imo. We are way overdue for another major pandemic, when it hits it will cause global chaos. It's going to make the plague look like child's play.

Its the third world nations who are still producing large quantities of babies. Baby producing in this country has hit the brakes hard over the last 50 years.

If anyone is worried about over population I suggest just driving through west Texas, NM, west OK, etc.

like to think technological advances will help to counteract some of this, but I think it's pretty apparent that we need to go through some cultural changes as well.

Well the granola heads and mommy blogs are trying to ban GMO's, so that solution could go out the window if they get their way.

It's not a personal space issue, it's a sustainability issue.

That we are really frickin far away from

One of the main issues is that people live much longer now than even 100 years ago

We may be screwing, but we're not reproducing at an increasing rate. Check out birth rates for any advanced country (Japan, most of Europe, USA, Canada, etc). As we advance, our birth rates reduce. Even though I don't agree with your premise that the world is going to run out of consumable resources, societal changes will drive people to have less children as a whole.

This. Even though the earth's population is still increasing, the rate at which its increasing is decreasing. As countries like India and China become more modern, the average number of children per family is decreasing. Some models predict earth's population could actually start to decrease in the next 100 years. All while technology in areas like water processing, agriculture, and recycling continues to improve thanks to materials science. The concerns that earth may not be able to support us sometime in the near future are overblown.

Yeah, Outside magazine had a good argument based on this. I don't want to eat GMOs here in the States, but places like Africa need them.
