DSLR camera and lense buying advice

My wife wants a dlsr camera for Christmas, primarily for taking pics of our one year old. Pretty easy for me to justify the cost since we've spent about $1k in the last year having pictures taken. I don't know much about cameras other than the research I've done the last couple weeks . She has zero experience with dslr cameras. I'm leaning towards the nikon d3300. It's on sale for a good price, and comes with an 18-55 lense. The store is running a deal where I can get a 55-300 lense for half price with the camera purchase. From my research it seems like a 35mm prime lense is ideal for indoor pics, and they're fairly cheap. So my question is, is this a good starter pack of lenses, is it too much for a beginner, should I just start with the lense that comes with the camera? Advice appreciated.

I recently purchased a Cannon T3i and I've really enjoyed it so far. I haven't come close to learning the ins and outs of it yet, so if your expecting her to take professional looking pics it will take a good bit of learning a practice.

Get a samsung galaxy s5 and you kill 100 birds with one stone. That phone takes super high quality pics.

That's a good beginning SLR. Prime lenses are always preferred, but getting good images is often more about the photographer then the gear. 50mm prime is cheap as well and takes beautiful pictures. Nothing wrong with the 55-300 as you will have a lens pair covering a good focal range. Also you may benefit from the crop factor of 1.5. Means your 300mm is 450mm. Great for air shows.

"super high quality"?
Not compared to a DSLR in the hands of someone who knows what they're doing.
And throw in that there are better phone cameras out there, and it's just a laughable comment.

I just recently bought a DSLR for the same reason. From what I researched about them Canon and Nikon are the 2 brands that work the best for their cost. I bought a Nikon D3200 and have been very happy with it. Friends of mine bought a Canon ti3, and also are very happy with it.
Very hard to go wrong, but remember that you are probably not a photography expert, and probably never will be(unless you are really interested in it). Don't go spending 700+ for a camera that you will only use on occasion.
As far as lenses go, the lenses that came with my camera is a 55-88mm lenses with vibration reduction. I asked a friend who does a lot of photography if I should buy a 88-200mm lenses too, and he said unless I am a sideline photographer that I would never need it.

A crop factor is nothing more than a crop adjustment. It doesn't mean your 300mm lens becomes 450mm.

I got a Nikon D3100 and love it. Definitely a noticable difference between that and other point and shoots. Also Nikon will take any Nikon lenses, even legacy lenses afaik.

:sigh:
Yeah... Those are absolutely perfect and just as good as a DSLR
You like your phone camera. That's great. But they don't compare to the results and range and flexibility of a DSLR with a couple decent lenses. Please just stop. It's not close and I don't know why you think you need to debate it.
ETA: And why spend $600 on a phone when you can spend the same amount and get so much more for your money?

the problem with camera pics are that they looks great when there is a lot of light or when things are completely still, but a DSLR will take great pictures in poor lighting and moving scenes too.

Yeah but we're talking about a guy that wants to buy a camera for his wife to take pics of their baby. IMO there is no need to spend 800 on something you're not gonna use that much. Get the phone and be done with it.
Plus, we're talking about baby pic so I doubt there is any super action stuff going on.
Save you're money Baw and get the phone.

Very true, and in no way shape or form do I dispute the merits of a quality DSLR, but the fact is that this is a great pic and high enough quality for the extreme majority out there.

One: you can get the phone for much less than 600
Two: the phone does a hell of a lot more than take pics
Three: she'll only use it 10 times max
Four: you said it yourself, the cameras true potential is only captured in the hands of a master.
Get the phone baw
