Saw a post on another thread about a plane crashing and being stripped of contents before authorities could arrive. Made me think of a story I heard on a Netflix doc about Yosemite Rock Climbers. Very interesting, albeit long, read.

LINK

quote:

Later that night, under cover of darkness, a crew loaded his plane with 6,000 pounds of Mexican red-hair marijuana.

quote:

Glisky and Nelson took off before dawn on December 9, 1976. After crossing back into U.S. airspace, they flew just off the coast of California, where anyone tracking the plane would assume it was an executive aircraft ferrying hotshots to San Francisco or Seattle. Halfway up the state, Glisky killed his running lights and turned sharply inland, hitting the deck to drop off radar.

quote:

A few bales stuck out of the ice like decaying stumps. The total haul was close to 2,000 pounds

quote:

A full-blown winter salvage operation to recover the fuselage and the bodies presumed to be inside was out of the question. It would be too costly to bring in heavy equipment to manage the ice and too dangerous to keep working in the finicky weather. Everyone expected that the approaching storm would cut off the backcountry, so Shackelton opted not to leave any of his rangers posted at the lake. The crime scene would stay put until spring

quote:

He found about a dozen young campers around a fire, so he passed his joint. Without revealing who he was, he told them a fantastic story about an airplane full of dope. "I knew Jon Glisky and Jeff Nelson were dead," Steinborn remembers. "I just had this romantic notion that someone should smoke that beautiful weed those guys were bringing back from Mexico."

TL/DR: Basically a drug plane carrying 6000 pounds of pot crashes. Authorities write it off because of winter, and hippies salvage the rest.

Isn't Mexican red hair weed just a fancy name for Mexican dirt weed?

Story is from 1976. Mexican was probably comparable quality with US homegrown then.

interesting read, I knew two guys that were laid off from the airlines that flew for Barry Seal, both died in "mysterious" plane crashes, I work with a guy that used to chase those types around while he was laid off from the airlines, shed some insight into those "mysteries"

Did your friend claim that the DEA or OGA was shooting them down?

I just finished a Barry Seal book called Smuggler's End, written by Del Hahn, who was an FBI agent on the Drug Task Force in BR. He said that Barry Seal said that if the Feds really wanted to stop drug smuggling, they just need to start shootings down a few drug planes. He said, "I'd stop, and so would a lot of other people."

A friend of the edna schwartz memorial commune invited our one decent looking chick to go to Mexico on a drug run friday getting back monday in his small plane. She asked me to come too so as to avoid the pilot trying to get in her pants on the overnight from chicago.
I declined, not liking the odds to get back by Monday to my ultra straight job at the federal reserve bank of chicago. She didnt go either. The dea chased our lad and in his effort to avoid them he crashed. Broken leg, two years in jail.
