Drone Video Shows The Horrifying Scale Of The Volkswagen Buyback

No one really knows the environmental ramifications of scrapping hundreds of thousands of cheating diesel Volkswagens. That’s scary in and of itself. But the sheer scale of what’s going on is hard to imagine, and while you’ve probably seen still shots of the various places where those hordes of VWs are parked, this drone video drives the point home better than any photo can.
The video comes to us from Michigan’s abandoned Pontiac Silverdome, once the home of the Detroit Lions and now the home of hundreds—thousands?—of parked Volkswagens. This shooter flew a drone overhead to capture it all.
Each of those was someone’s car once. Goddamn.
It’s worth nothing that the Silverdome is just one such site across the country where the cheating VWs sit, awaiting their fate, whatever that may be. We at Jalopnik know of at least four or five other sites and there are almost certainly more.
So multiply what you’re seeing here by four, five, six or more and you start to get a grasp on what’s really going on. It’s nuts to think about.

The easy solution here is just to sell them used in Central America or Mexico, or some country where they don't care, or can be paid off.

Hard to imagine VW couldn't just get these cars up to code and resell them.

At least that parking lot is getting used for something.
The Pontiac Silver Dome is an utter eyesore, even for Detroit area standards.

There was nothing wrong with the cars other than them not getting quite as good emissions standards as they advertised, right?
What a waste. More government idiocy.

I was expected to be blown away by your title. I'm very underwhelmed. It's not that many cars even if you multiply it by four or five times.

I don't understand this at all, why not just sell them somewhere? The longer they sit the more will go bad. Can't they sell them in Mexico or something?

And to think all those poor VW's are destined for the gulag and eventually.... the furnace. God damn how could we let this happen again?

yep. ridiculous that a car with such great gas mileage is fricked due to regulations (and cheating)

you're not grasping why they're there in the first place.

Or they could just resell them with a conversion package or something.
I mean, vintage cars don't need to meet retarded emissions standards.
Why are we wasting perfectly good cars because of bean counters and red tape?

correct, and their emissions were still better than a large percentage of cars already on the road. EPA

quote:True, but we're past that. There has to be a way to prevent all of these cars from going to waste.

After the sale, emissions standards mostly consist of making sure your O2 sensors and gas caps work, in the areas that actually check them,.
