Earlier this evening the Mrs and I were travelling West on I12 when we passed two vehicles, one behind the other, and each were towing another vehicle. None of the vehicles had license plates, temporary plates or even inspection stickers of any kind anywhere on any of the vehicles (not in windows, not on the dash, nothing).

A few miles up the road we passed another two vehicles each towing a vehicle behind them and none of those four had any plates, stickers, tags, etc.

Is there some special permit one can get to drive vehicles without any sort of visible plates?

Yes it's called the "Illegal Alien is Superior to the Citizen" permit.

It allows you to walk into our country, disobey our laws, drive to the east coast and buy cheap vehicles, and take them back to the Rio Grande Valley and fix them up, them sell them off to your hombres there and back in Mexico.

Texas is very paranoid. I think here and a few other states force you to have license plates front and back.

Yup. But drive North to Okie and you only need a rear plate and don't need insurance or inspection.

Its always Mexicans headed towards west, towards Mexico. Cops often don't bother because they aren't going to pay anyway.

I suspect they have some sort of used car permit in a state that is a little more relaxed on the matter. I see North Carolina plates on a lot of the trucks/vans that are doing the towing.

Yessir.

I'm trying to figure out what role that plays in Texas' mysterious policy of not using salt on frozen roads... only sand. It's terrible...and the second you cross into OK - The salt begins and there is almost no ice. :tinfoil:

When it snows in Texas... automatic holiday. Damn dude you live in Dallas? Traffic in Dallas sucks arse. I've lived in Fort Worth my whole life and can count on my hands how many times I've crossed Dallas County.

i don't know the law, but if it's registered online and you have insurance.. if you just purchased it you have time to get a tag.. maybe it's a recent purchase? idk.. i wouldn't worry over it though.. when i sold our van i took our plates off and change the ownership online to the buyer.. and he drove it off with no tag..

i think if you have a bill of sale and stuff you may get 30 days to get your tag? again, i don't know the law, but i wouldn't worry too much over it

This is incorrect. Inspection isn't required, but insurance damn sure is.
