yes for years. and i didnt put on headphones to ignore them??

driving with headphones is obviously dangerous being that most road noise/sounds will be blocked out. if you dont have bluetooth or a headphone jack, is the radio not sufficient?

So one ear is fine then

I talk on the phone with one ear bud in pretty much all the time. Getting work done on the road is a matter of efficiency.

Driving with kids screaming in the back is going to be far more distracting and dangerous

I usually drive with bluetooth headphones on, though not listening to music. I hear everything going on around me.

If on an unfamiliar drive, I'm likely just listening to Waze, but am ready to answer phone calls without being distracted by finding my phone.

If on a familiar drive or long stretch, might be listening to a podcast at a modest volume level that doesn't interfere with hearing.

Important note: I live in NYC and don't own a car. I use the zipcar car sharing service, so am very frequently in different cars which have different stock equipment. So, it isn't easy for me to reasonably do anything else.

Bearing the above in mind, some people might be similarly on headphones because they are driving someone else's car (wife/husband/son/daughter/mom/dad/etc). I'm sure a few are just blaring loud music to an unsafe, distracting level, but there are also legit reasons.

Driving with headsets on (R.S. 32:295.2) - Prohibits the wearing of headphones by any operator of a motor vehicle. "Headphones" are defined as a headset, headphone, or listening device other than a hearing aid , which covers or is inserted in both ears. Law enforcement and certain motorcycle helmets are exempted from enforcement. The penalty is a $25 fine plus court costs.

I fail to see how it's any more dangerous than talking via Bluetooth. Ear buds don't block out much sound at all

WTF

Mine block out a ton of sound. I actually use them as ear plugs in the office sometimes without listening to music.

Also, I've seen this plenty of times with giant Beats headphones that cover the whole ear. Those frickers block out everything.

Don't see an issue with one ear.

You just gotta hear someone honk. That shite could save your life.

About 4yrs ago I was running a pawn shop in Aurora, CO. and we sold a lady some Bose noise cancelling headphones. She gets in her SUV, plugs them in, then proceeds to backup and t-bone a car coming down the aisle. This despite the fact the guy was honking like a mofo. I thought this was universally against the law.

Buy a bluetooth FM transmitter that plugs into your cigarette lighter.
