Driving from New Orleans to Asheville

Is there anything cool to stop and see on the way? I've driven this way a bunch of times, but this time I'm going up with a friend who's never been anywhere in the South for the most part. We'll have a couple extra days with nothing to do and can easily just spend them in Asheville, but I figured I'd see if anyone had any recommendations on anything that might be in between.

Just make sure you hit the Orange Peel when you get in town and see a live act. Great venue.

Any idea where you'll be driving through? Chattanooga is a nice place to stop.

I did stop at the Bear Bryant museum in T-town on my last trip back up from Shreveport. Just throwing that out there.

Can either take the Birmingham/Chattanooga route or the Montgomery/Atlanta route depending on if there's anything to see.

Jeez, that was a disappointment. I guess having seen Carlsbad Caverns as a kid had something to do with that, though.

Clemson's campus, Atlanta (if you are into that), and a lot of natural beauty driving through the lower Appalachians.

If you dont want to see a parking lot, stay out of ATL near rush hour. Other than that I'm out. Last time I drove it was in a hurry. Young screaming kids. I couldn't get there fast enough.

There's always the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Smokey Mountains. Lots of trails with water falls. There's a real nice one in Cherokee.

There's a little BBQ joint called the Smoke House in Evergreen Alabama off 65...
It's pretty good....

There's more natural beauty with the Bham/Chattanooga route imho. Check out Little River Canyon outside of Ft Payne. Then Ruby Falls in Chattanooga and of course the Smoky Mountains. Better still would be to go both ways coming and going. Go Bham/Chattanooga one way and then the Atlanta route the other way.

Of those choices id take Bham/Chattanooga. I drove to Asheville this summer. Stop in Birmingham for smoked wings and a craft beer at Saw's juke joint.
In Chattanooga there's a pretty cool hostel I stayed at. It was really nice and clean and in the downtown area. It's called the Crash Pad and you guys would probably like it. There's bars and restaurants nearby. While there you gotta drive up lookout mountain, of course. People say to do ruby falls but it looked pretty cheesy so I skipped.
After, you could drive through the smokies to the beautiful town of Asheville. If you want to see the depravity of the modern man, check out gatlinburg/pigeon forge, but I'd consider avoiding them.
