Does anyone miss the (mostly) anonymous Chat Rooms back in the 90's

(And the nature of the internet in general)
Thinking back to AOL and even before and after that. Chat rooms were the norm, based on interests and a bunch of people not knowing each other having discussions. You had cool services like The Sierra Network (TSN, iNN). IRC was big. Everyone had a "handle" but you didn't have to have an identity unless you wanted to.
Chats were in real time so nothing was really saved or logged for future reference. People said more because of this nature than they do today.
Today's internet is all about identity. Social networks are the opposite of anonymity. You are encouraged to have an identity. People get in pissing matches of their lives. Real substance seems to have faded.
This forum (and I guess to a lesser extent, those like it) though not linked to social media or real names, still saves and archives everything. It's a bit of a middle ground perhaps.
The only real place left even remotely close to those old days is 4chan. We all know how crazy that site is. I've recently starting trying to chat on omegle bc it's similar, but most people end up being guys looking for chicks to "cyber" with.
Anyone miss those days?

AOL was the best, loved the anonymous specific high school chat rooms when I was in high school.

I loved some IRC. Slayed tons of poon from various places and d/l the shite out of music.

I probably unknowingly jerked off to so many dudes back in the day that it disgusts me.

Breesus, as funny as that is bc ASL was such a thing, it's still exists on omegle and it makes me laugh every time.

As a young teenager, they were pretty exciting. Now not so much, but having immediate communication with people from all over the world was pretty cool.
Something to keep in mind, though, was the general curiosity everyone had then. People in those chat rooms, especially early on, were not the same type of people who clutter up your FB feed now. Later on it certainly got overwhelmingly "ASL"ish, but it wasn't always so dominated by that.
While plenty of shite about social media amuses me, those days weren't filled with people telling you how to get rich working 60 minutes a week, weird dudes hollaring at any female and people reposting memes or clickbait.

It was pretty cool back then getting to chat with people from all over the world. I was very careful back then to keep IRL and online separate.

It was bad. The first time I met a girl off IRC was scary as shite. I drove to Atlanta(5) hours away. The only person I told about it was my brother. I told him that if he had not talked to me by Sunday night to call the police and send them to X hotel in Atlanta because I had probably been fooled and would be tied to the bed and have been raped by some psycho dude.

I'm talking 93-94 when Yahoo chat was just coming out, you had to scan pictures and shite and not many people had a scanner. Later on when everyone had web cams it was different.

We had an Atlanta chat room that would meet at 57th Fighter Squadron every Friday (or was it Saturday) night.
So the chat room wasn't so anonymous.
