I'm doing some research but nothing beats a local. What is it like?

Not a local, but I lived there for a few months early in the year. It's an ok place. You will see multiple car accidents. There are things to do but it's pretty quiet. The loop around it makes it pretty easy to navigate. Granted I was working 14-16 hour days so I didn't really get to go see the sights too much.

ETA: its very dusty and windy

I think the motto of Midland is "frick, fight and trip pipe"

Have a family member that lives in Odessa.

They seem to like it.

When I went to Midland for work once, I thought it was terrible.

Would need a 50% raise minimum to consider moving there.

Stayed in Midland one night passing through to AZ. Went out to get something to eat and it seemed like every person in town tried to race me at every stoplight.

Lived there for a few months. It's the most boring place in America aptly named for being in the middle of nowhere. Half the population leaves on the weekends given that there's nothing to do but watch minor league baseball. No bar scene whatsoever to speak of.

I should also warn you that housing and apartments are sky high. I was looking for a perminant apartment and the cheapest one I could find was $1800 a month, which is fricking insane given way cheaper rent than that in Uptown Dallas which has way more to do.

From San Angelo, went to Midland Odessa a lot growing up because I had family there.

Don’t.

I've had to stay in Midland on prolonged work trips many times, like multiple weeks.

My advice? Don't.

I've never been, though I've known people who live there.

From what I can tell, it's got to be the worst town in the United States with a population of greater than 100k in which one could possibly live. It seems to have no redeeming qualities as a place into itself, and it's literally about 500 miles from anywhere else you might possibly want to go, to get away from it.

You must've lived there at the height of the oil boom at those prices. There's no way it's that high now.

I don't live in Midland, but have cousins from Andrews which is like Midland but there actually is nothing to do at all.

There is (I think) a double A baseball team in Midland, minor Hockey team in Odessa and then you can drive to Lubbock for Texas Tech games. Not a great place for watching local sports, aside from high school football I guess (and that exists anywhere in Texas). But, if you can make friends with the local ranchers, you will probably have a good time hanging out on their property, but I don't know how hard that would be to do. I've also heard the bars are pretty intense.

If you own land out there and want to raise cattle and enjoy historical societies and museums and such it would probably be a really cool place to live, and there are a lot of families so it is also a pretty good place to raise a family.

That said, I would only live there if it was the only way I could get further or if I planned to settle down there for decades (and that's only if I was making a killing out there). I like all the historical stuff, but it's too far from another city for me. I would hate being that far from Austin and DFW.

Don't live in Midland but familiar with the Permian region.

Unless you are going to be stacking oilfield cash or you married in to money there is no reason to live there.

If you are hiring on with O&G company I'd rent because the real estate market is inflated right now and the current O&G bubble will most likely burst within 24 months. You don't want to be out of work with a $2k/mo mortgage. (Yes, right now the Permian is booming again)

Big Spring and Andrews are towns to consider if you want a smaller community.

If you have a choice I'd look at Colorado and Wyoming before w Texas. Same industry, better scenery.
