Do I think a large number of influential people congregate and try to 'steer the boat'? Yes. Their interests and convictions aren't uniform, though. If they really were, we'd all be up shite creek.

While I have no doubt there are descendants of the Rothschild clan with significant power, I don't think an entire family can maintain centuries of appropriate training and rearing to create a clan of ubermenschen. It just doesn't happen. The kind of material wealth we are talking about will, most of the time, create people unable to control it over time.

Seriously, maybe kinda sorta something like this.
There are very powerful people that are able to exert a large amount of influence over the general population if for nothing else because of the value of their economic assets. They are trying grow or keep these economic assets by making moves and business deals. They aren't necessarily looking out for the average person's interests when they do this, but we are affected nonetheless.
There isn't some great overarching conspiracy. People aren't that organized, and they are generally too self centered to serve some greater organization that completely.
