Does anybody really gargle saltwater when a doctor prescribes it?

My doctor never prescribes that....but Mom does every time I get a sore throat. And surprisingly it works well.

I just tried it and my throat still hurts. Am I supposed to gargle for 15 minutes or just a couple of quick gargles?

Yes, when I would feel my tonsils getting irritated I would do it. Always worked for me and I did not need a doctor's visit.

Would you rather have heard cancer and you'll need aggressive chemo? Geez man.

Use warm salt water.
Gargle for a good while.
You should fill a cup and do it until it's empty.

I always used warm water in a 20 oz. Glass and gargle for 30 seconds and spit ,repeat until glass is empty. 4 times a day

Definitely shortens the duration and severity of a soar throat. Gargle 2-4 times a day with warm saltwater at the onset of the malady. Like others stated, never got that advice from a physician. Just Mom.

Really surprised at so many actual responses. I was sure by now someone would recommend gargling something else. Proud of the board today!

The question is, why are you going to see a doctor when all you have to do is gargle warm salt water? BTW, it works.

Since I've been doing that before I ever recall going to a doctor, I'm not sure what you're suggesting. And, for the record, I don't recall a physician ever recommending this to me. But, I may volunteer that I do that when I feel a sore throat coming on.

I've been unable to sleep well for the past several nights so I was thinking it was an infection. This is the first time in over a year I've been to the doctor for something like this. It's rare for me. I usually let it run its course.

Lemme guess, you are actually just mad that the doctor wouldn't give you pain pills because you told him about your sore throat?

Gotcha. I can understand you going in case it was an infection. The last thing you want is for that to get out of control. I thought you just had a slight sore throat.

Surely the "patients" come up with better excuses than a sore throat if they are wanting pain candy.

Not pain pills. I've never been given that from a doctor, just been told to take ibuprofen. Really what I wanted was a steroid shot. Those things get you up and running in no time. I just travel so much that I hate being sluggish
