I am asking because it seems to be "old fashioned" by alot of my friends (also millenials) to use a checkbook.

I pay most bills electronically and most restaurants won't take checks. However, I still make certain bill payments via check. If I owe someone money in person, I also prefer checks to cash.

In particular, why do some major chain restaurants have an aversion to checks.

You can write a check with no money in the bank but not use a debit card

For kids school stuff that's about it.

It's a rarity, but sometimes necessary for those assholes that charge a premium for the use of a credit card and cash is not available or not an option.

Checkbook (as in balances and shite)? Hell no, that's what online banking is for.

WTH would you pay a restaurant tab with a check?

And yes, I still pay some bills by check. I also agree its better to pay personal debts with a check so a record of the payment exists.

Only to places that charge a convenience fee for credit cards.

We use them for the babysitter and our water bill. The water bill COULD be paid online but their site is a pain in the neck. I just drop it off on my way to work.

Other than that, mostly a debit card.

I imagine most, if not all, don't have the means to verify the account and avoid a bounced check.

I write checks to my housekeeper. She's old and doesn't have venmo. Other than that, no.

Just for the occasional bills I pay from home. All routine bills are paid by direct withdrawal. Haven't carried a checkbook with me since credit cards became available a long time ago.

Yep. I have a bill paying account for household stuff that doesn't have a debit/credit card attached to it. I don't have to worry much about identify theft. Also, I like the idea that some gov't frickhead doesn't know where I've been every minute of the day and exactly what I've been purchasing. At least make them work for it.

So why don't you establish a Venmo or Paypal account instead? Much easier than fooling with checks.

Only for my son's extra circular activities...and even then, my wife writes them. The last check I physically wrote my self was probably 8 years ago and I would imagine it was for pizza.

Only in my business, still pay invoices for a lot of things through the mail with a check.

My dad is the only person I know that still pays everything with checks and refuses to use any form of online payments.

Very rarely. The wife pays the housekeeper with a check made out to "cash" and the place I get my deer processed doesn't take cards, so it's cash or check only. And sometimes a little something to drop in the offering plate(that way there's a record of it for tax purposes).

My kids daycare didn't convert to direct withdrawal until last month so I was writing checks for that. Still write checks for my daughters dance class.
