If so, what are some of the craziest challenges you've encountered? If you don't, what's stopping you?

In my old business the craziest challenge I had was staying one step ahead of the cops.

Inventory tax is the one that pisses me off the most.
Mostly it's been positive.
The worst thing is the constant solicitacians from other businesses that want you to use their products and such. Other than taxes it isn't bad.

What I've learned in 18 years:

Don't let the business own you.
Firing customers is sometimes the right thing-they aren't always right.
If he's a problem the first 90 days, he ain't gonna get any better. (employee)
You can't pay top people too much.
Never say "No" to your top customers.
Find a good attorney and listen when he talks.
Borrow sparingly-don't live on your line of credit.
Underpromise and overdeliver. If you can't do it, tell the truth.
Avoid small businesses as clients-they have all the need and none of the money.
There is profit in chaos. Act accordingly.

Judging by the wide variety of bids I got, there's a ton of money to be made.

Most customers would fail my selection criteria, though.

Collecting! I still have an unpaid invoice for West Jefferson Medical Center for over $20,000 from 2007.

you had some good ideas about it though, seems like the one thing most small contractors like that have in common is the inability to manage money

It is like any other business, you'd have to educate the customer about why you cost more.

For example, using the correct PVC instead of heating it with a torch to make the bends.

We would stick w/ second time pool builders (owners).
First-timers don't know any better.
