If so, have you noticed any significant difference? My dad got 3 sheets of lattice and placed them together with each sheet off centered by 2 inches to allow rain to go through. He then cut out a hole from the middle edge so the sheets would fit on the sides and front while secured to a wooden frame to keep it from drooping, so the lattice is on 3 of the 4 sides. He took temperature readings of the unit before and after placing the cover around the unit and showed me its about 36 degrees cooler so I guess I will wait to compare his electric bill vs last year to see what benefit... overall he spent about $55 total in materials (wood was leftover from a decking project.

Doubt it works.

If it works that design would be used for all of them

There is no point in doing that. Your restricting air

If you do something like this I would avoid covering the top. The top is where the heat is supposed to dissipate. The mist thingy is cool in theory, but I'm sure it would lead to terrible corrosion or do absolutely no good in our south Louisiana humidity.

Creates mineral/scale build up in the unit that cannot be cleaned out.....results in having to replace the unit.

BTW, rain water =/= tap water......rain water is almost identical to distilled water.

neighbor growing up across the street actually had one permintly mounted on his roof. He'd turn it on every evening when he got home.

The top is uncovered, its just around the 3 sides exposed to the sun (back side against the house)

I don't know if the difference would be measureable on a monthly basis, but it damn sure won't hurt. I would do something like plant a bush or tree to shade the unit.

So long as it's not too close to the sides, so I can breathe you should be fine.

It isnt going to do anything about the air temp. That thing is pulling through a lot of air from the surroundings. You need to cool that air off to improve the heat transfer, and a little shading isn't going to do much good on that front.

I'm a professional handyman, you should go out and get some 3/4" plywood , cut it to fit snug , then drill screw it straight to the unit .... caulk any gaps and make sure to felt and shingle the top and watch your meter slow to a crawl ....

Your welcome ...

I just spray mine down with the hose when it starts to struggle to keep up. Seems to help out a little.
