When were you in high school? I remember in the early 2000's there were academic competitions. Each school could send 2 kids for a particular subject for a regional competition. It then went to district and then to state.
There was also the state wide Mu Alpha Theta convention where students tested in individual tests, team relays, and other "fun" math events.

They are not participation awards when only the winners are recognized. Participation awards are significantly more common among athletics than they are among academics, state recognized I mean. Hell there are 9 state football championships now and they want to make it this way for basketball, baseball, and track now

was meant as a joke but you're right, it's the same or worse where I live, seems like every team goes to the playoffs and there are enough state champions to form a new country, hell, the local girls hs softball team has painted on their stadium that they were national champions a few years ago, don't quite know how that happens
They still have literary rally for a bunch of different subjects. There's a district competition and then the top scorers qualify for the state rally. I don't think you get scholarships for winning anything at state though. Maybe LSU gives a small state rally scholarship since they host it, but no other schools do.

I really wish there was a sarcasm font damn it.
And yeah it's getting ridiculous, especially when they don't reduce the number of teams invited to the playoffs. Some divisions have teams with 1 or fewer wins in the playoffs for football

They do, but it's minimal. Winner gets a one-time check for a few hundred dollars. Runners-up get nada.

Dating myself, I won the state literary rally in World Geography in the 70's. Received a $200 scholarship to LSU. We were everybody poor so joined the military and finished BS and MS while in.

I came in second in the regional rally for American history. Didn't do as well at the state rally though.

Got first in Algebra II at State rally back in the day
Kids are playing travel ball, there is no time for this. What parent would want to sacrifice their kids chances for a athletic scholly and shot at the pros so they can be a math wiz or answer questions about the Illiad.
