I don't think phone batteries would last as long if it was recording all the time, plus it would show up on bandwidth use. I don't think your suggestion is a crazy one fyi, people are way too blind to question things like that.

You see so many ads as you browse the internet these days that you're programmed to ignore just about all of them. The select few that actually look like a connection are probably just highlighted by your brain, making it seem crazier than it is.

Personalized ads have come a long way lately though and are mainly based on local cache on your machine. Ads on facebook for example are often by a third party without facebook actually controlling the content, it's based on your local search history and cache. So the thought that Google, Facebook, etc know everything about you so they can target you isn't quite right.

I haven't had your experience with ads, but I'm pretty sure Google is listening to me. On more than one occasion I've been discussing something, let's say James Van Der Beek (random name), then I'll grab my phone and start typing "James" and it'll suggest "James Van Der Beek", like that would be the most popular "James" to search.

My company had its annual event last week for all of the cients and Gopi Kallayil, Chief Brand Evangelist for Google was one of our keynote speakers.

He probably didn't scratch .1% of the surface of what Google is capable of and he had the entire room slack-jawed at how creative and advanced they are about gathering data and using it. I wouldn't doubt that this is going on for a second.

I am almost positive our phones are always listening. I watched Mud about 6 months ago and wondered where it was filmed. I typed in Google "Where was" and it auto- filled "Mud filmed?" That was a weird coincidence. I use a 2014 Moto X and typed it in Google.

Last weekend, we are watching Boyhood. My wife puts in her iPhone 6 in google "Where was" and it auto fills "Boyhood filmed?"

Something is listening.

I've been discussing a trip with my dad for the last couple of weeks. Weather, flights, etc to that destination. When I googled how is the weather in...it came up New York. Not even close to where my dad went.

One thing I did and I recommend everyone do is to switch your search engine to DuckDuckGo. They do not record your search data like Google does. At least they claim not to.

You don't have to have searched for that in particular. You could have visted a website that has something to do with whatever it is in some way, and I'm sure google ads is designed to pick up patterns in typical interests that seem to go together, or additional ads that seem to work on people who have already searched for x y and z (x y and z being unrelated to the item at hand).

I feel like if phones constantly listened battery life would be worse, the phone nerds would have picked up on it by now, and aside from that it just seems there are more efficient ways that having the phone pick up words spoken and sent back to google ads to tailor ads to an individual. Seems like more of a "shotgun approach" when the whole premise of google ads seems to be more of a targeted approach.

I don't necessary believe it is listening and adapting ads to your speak, but functionality is certain available.

So you are saying you think that the biggest advertising agency in the world has the ability to serve you ads for products within minutes of you talking about them but they aren't using it?

WTF? Why wouldn't I want to use the most powerful search engine?

I don't mind having the ads on the page something that I may actually be interested in. Better than the bullshite they had before.

aloud with a friend or family member about a purchasable item: a golf clubs, a gun, suits for a wedding, etc.

I posted about this on the SECR a few weeks back. Hadn't googled anything on golf or a suit but mentioned it to some people verbally. Ads appeared within the day.
