Do intoxicants open your mind or dull the senses?

There are two prevailing views on drugs and alcohol. One sees them in a favorable light, with homeopathic properties. The other sees them as the spawn of Satan.
In order to further our understanding of the effects of intoxicants on the human condition, we will entertain notions. What say yee? Are they of the Devil or a gateway to the gods?
Have drugs or alcohol ever enlighten you? If so how? Do they enrich you or destroy you? Should we have a war on drugs or make them legal?

If we're ever going to make serious progress in ending the war on drugs, you're going to have to stop posting. This is just too much ammo to overcome.

It depends. Tripping can make you think a little deeper. Getting barred out definitely dulls your senses a bit.

Having a war on drugs is like for fornicating to fight virginity.

I’ve only seen the negative effects of drugs on people.
Saw cocaine, in particular, destroy what was once an unusually smart family member.
Life is too good for me to consider experimenting with any drugs. That said, I do understand at least on the surface why others get into them.

I doubt alcohol enlightens me, but it certainly improves my mood temporarily. I haven’t really tried anything harder that wasn’t prescribed.

psychedelics can open your mind.
Everything else is just for fun or to maintain an addiction.

That has got to,be one of the worst analogies I’ve ever seen.

Can also blow you mind apart. Very few things in life are 100% one thing or another. I have seen the negative effects of psychedelics up close and personal within my own family, it is not a pretty site. Same is true for alcohol for me.
Some people should avoid any intoxicants/mind/mood altering substance. Unfortunately, these things are typically found out after the fact.
On that note I’ll end with a

I don't know why the frick I put myself through reading your threads every single time you make one.
I should've learned by now but it's like you've got some kind of spell over the OT, where we know the thread is gonna suck but we can't stop clicking on it.

You fricked that saying up so bad.
It's "Fighting for peace is like fricking for virginity."

I've put more thought into this than I should have and I don't think this makes any sense. "Fighting for peace is like fricking for virginity" makes sense. This, not so much.

Not sure why I bother to give a serious answer to a thread you start but...
History is full of artists, writers, inventors who used intoxicants on the regular. Hemingway pops into my mind as a starter. I am not going to Google just to make the point but feel free to do so. I wrote for a national publication for years and can tell you that my best work was done half in the bag. But I always edited sober.
So, based on my experience, I believe that some intoxicants taken in moderation can open the mind and stimulate creatiivity.
