Do fake story/click-bait websites make a lot of money?

Every time I surf around to kill time, I encounter at least 1 or see the advertisements for them on the bottom of whatever I'm looking at.
Is this big business via ad revenue? And who is responsible for them? Private individuals or are there companies that just own hundreds of clickbait/fake-story sites?
Example:

Me too. Which is why I made the thread
Might be fun to make up story headlines like that all day after ripping the bong.

Someone that works for one of those ad companies explained that the number of dumb people, even if it's only 30% of people that see it, that click on it is enough to support the entire industry.

Yes of course. The slideshows allow websites to build value via "page views" to their advertisers even though it's bullshite really. The slideshow also allows a new ad to pop up on each new slide.
PS - like "Top 15 hottest athletes... #11 will break the internet". (You must click thru 10 slides to get to #11, and sometimes double that if they have the picture slide then the next frame is a text slide of what you just viewed)

It's amazing how much money can be made off of stupid people. I can't even knock the integrity of the people who make those ads.

For real.
Making up stupid headlines to waste 10 seconds of a dumbass' day doesn't seem too unethical to me

The better question is "does seeing ads on the site lead to revenue for the advertisers?"
I don't see how it does. I can't recall ever buying anything just because I saw an ad for it. It's not like if you accidentally click on an ad that you have to buy their product.

You should see all the idiots on the Rant lining someone's pocket every time a stupid poll comes out - "best mascot, best tailgating, best player, etc".
A week later no one even knows who won the freakin thing. They are now just going to have to pay more for products they buy because of the companies that have to pay more to advertise with the website who threw a meaningless poll up on their site. "Tiger stadium is losing by 9,000 clicks/ er votes so everyone go to this website and vote for Tiger stadium". Idiots !!!
