So I was watching The Incredibles this weekend, and I saw the scene where Mr. Incredible received his first message from Syndome's crew. The message self-destructs and causes smoke to come out of Bob's office, thus tripping the sprinkler system.

More I think about it, I cannot remember ever seeing a home with sprinkler system. Seen them in apartment complexes and other setups that share common walls or fire walls, but never in a regular single-family.

Even more odd since the story is supposed to take place in the early 1970s.

Soooooo, anyone here have sprinkler system in house? If so, did you install it or buy the house that way? Finally, is it a local code that requires it or just desire for increased safety?

Probably because for all of your life you've lived places where it rains all the fricking time.

I love when you play your silly 'look at me, I'm a such a hardass' schtick, and you look this foolish.

Maybe, I should have given him the benefit of the doubt. But, I'm not so sure.

It's not a code requirement and it's fricking expensive. That's why.

But yes there are homes that have them

Yeah, just the valve box and backflow preventer is around $30k. The 12" line runs $200/ft installed and all that cost just gets the water to your house.

And if there is a false alarm or small controllable fire the floors, furniture, electronics, Sheetrock are wet and probably ruined!?!?

And there is no need for it if you live in single family dwelling, have fire rated Sheetrock walls, modern wiring, and no room more than 20 ft from an exit.

In Florida, they are required by code on any single family home with four or more conditioned floors.

isn't it activated through significant heat and not smoke? I wouldn't think a controllable fire would set it off considering it would most likely start low down and by the time the heat reached high enough to set it off it would be beyond controllable with small fire extinguisher.

Agree.

I did add heat sensors to the garages, though.

This is way off. You don't even have a 12" line going to the fire hydrant (most likely).

Should be around $4-6 sq. ft. to sprinkle a single family dwelling.

Yeah, I should have said 8". I got a quote recently for a childcare/education building.

It has to deliver 1,500 gal/min, heat sensors, automatic control valves, tied into the fire alarm, separate control box. And once you have it installed and paid for, you're supposed to have it inspected regularly. I wasn't looking at costs for a residence, but the requirements for that probably aren't anywhere near as bad as for a public building.

There was a guy near here who had to put sprinklers in his house because his wife was watching kids on the side and when she got twelve kids, or something like that, they made him install it. Cost him out the arse.

I believe it is required in new construction of Highland Park houses now.
