Jesus Christ. This isn't the 1700s. Use a thermometer. There's like a 13 degree window where you are distilling methanol.

But here's the catch if you don't remember to pull that out, ethanol is used to treat methanol poisoning.

Drink up.

You need to either buy a still or have one built. A 55 gallon plastic drum with a SS/copper coil to go inside it, and another plastic drum for fermentation. I have access to one. Shine was made and it tasted pretty good, but whiskey is next on the list. Yields about 20 gallons.

You talking about the one where anonymous tips kept coming in for all of the moonshiners in the area and it turned out to be two old women getting rid of their competition?

With that high of a water content, it better be smooth.

And with today's nosy but ignorant busybody culture, if they see your setup, they'll probably report you for "cooking meth."

I brew beer and i'm always waiting for the cops to show up because a neighbor thinks i'm cooking meth... So far so good

Isn't distilling spirits without a license still illegal?

No, it's legal to make your own, you can't sell it or distribute it. If it's for self consumption, you're good to go.

Don't think I've seen it mentioned but it is very dangerous. Alcohol vapors around an open flame can make for a bad day. Be very careful.

Takes a pretty damn big setup to make an appreciable amount. Friend of mine has a 1 gallon set up and it takes a few batches to even make a jar full.

This. It's amazing how many shithouse lawyers we have around here.

The Federal laws are quite clear. You cannot distill spirits even for your own consumption unless you have the proper permits to do so. And it ain't cheap.

Now, practically speaking, the Feds are much more concerned about drug dealers and others than they are about Billy Bob Buckteeth making himself some Mountain Dew.

But home distillation is still illegal in all 50 states.
