If a buddy and I were hypothetically about to start buying equipment and ingredients to distill our own Rum for fun, does anyone have any advice about the process or where to buy equipment?

Isn't distilling spirits without a license still illegal?

Yep

And with today's nosy but ignorant busybody culture, if they see your setup, they'll probably report you for "cooking meth."

You growing weed too? Quit posting about your illegal activities on the internet. That would be sound advice.

Watch the Andy Griffith show. Some dude does it on there, and gets arrested for it as well

make sure everything you use is either stainless or copper. any other type of surface will end up in your final product.

do it outside

If you are using a second stage/thumper keg do not worry about flavors as they will not come through.

single stage comes out weaker but whatever you use to ferment will provide some flavor.

Hillbilly Stills has some good equipment.

Yes it's illegal but I don't think anyone really gives a shite unless you start selling it.

Advice: Focus on your mash, if it's not good, the liquor won't be good, and it's the more difficult process.

That's kinda what I figured. Last time I was in a brew supply place, the had a wort chiller (copper worm) with a huge sign, NOT FOR DISTILLING SPIRITS!

What you need is one of those tabletop water distillation setups. You know, to distill water for science or something.

Someone needs to link to a statute showing it is illegal because I am 90% sure it's only illegal if you are producing it for sale. And that falls under tax laws and FDA type rules, not really criminal statutes per se.

I have some friends who distill "vinegar" because moonshine and whiskey are illegal to distill in Alabama.

If it's legal to distill rum in your area then you should check out these guys.

MileHi

For my friends they use the shell of a 15gal keg, and bought a reflux still to put on top of it about 3 foot tall that cost around $250. They've got about 20 gallons of "vinegar" they are aging that I've been impressed with it's as good as most stock vinegar you can buy.

Here you go. Enjoy reading.

Cliffs notes - Yep, it's technically illegal to self-distill spirits in any quantity. As someone said, if you ain't trying to sell it, nobody is likely to much care.

it is illegal. There is no question about it, but I knew several people who have done it. The one thing you have to be very careful about is the methanol. that shite can kill you.

There are lots of guides on how to build a still with a keg and some copper tubing. You can distill on a stove even, its pretty easy and I did it. But it turned out nasty.

you can also do ice distillation if you live somewhere cold. I had a friend do that, he brewed up some plum wine and then set itoutside and let it freeze, then scraped off the ice. it tasted alright.

As a ton of people have said it's still illegal.

If brewing beer has taught me anything, make sure everything is as clean as you possibly can before any sort of alcohol is made. It is so easy to pervert the beer/liquor.

You're better off buying equipment for brewing your own beer. Homebrewing is legal in all 50 states, and no one will report you.

However what you shouldn't do is boil out the alcohol after making beer. That'd be illegal.

it is illegal to use a still to produce alcohol for consumption without proper permits. It is not however illegal to own a still as long as it is for distilling water or something else.

My advice would be not to post photos of your progress on facebook to look cool
