Disney has today deployed metal detectors to the park entrances and introduced a new policy prohibiting toy guns and adult costumes. Three metal detector are now in place at the Magic Kingdom alongside the bag check area. A random sampling of guests will be sent through the scanners, which are being operated by a third party security firm, CSC.

Pretty big news as Disney try's to keep your park experience outside the realities of daily life. I've seen people posting recently that security is making a much bigger uniformed prescience as well.

Not selling Star Wars blasters is a bad idea.

The day someone shoots up Disney World is the day we've officially failed as a species.

A park shooting would cost a ton of revenue.

It would make a good target for a terrorist attack I guess.

You're absolutely right, but nonetheless this sentence made me sad.

A metal detector won't stop that.

Where are people most corralled?

Waiting to get in the park.

But it would be a great time to go because the lines would be short.

Hopefully they profile better than the airport screeners.

I wonder if Toy Story will be edited to take out Woody's "reach of the sky"?

turning Disney World into a Safe Space.

They're also posting trigger warnings in Epcot.

adult costumes

This has always been banned except for the Halloween parties. They don't want children confusing random adults for Disney workers. I wonder if they will ban it during that time too. That was the best part of the Halloween parties to see all the very elaborate costumes.

They caught someone trying to sneak in a gun a week or so ago.

It was the week after Thanksgiving. We were there. That Friday we noticed Disney had their K-9 teams outside of all the gates and the bag checkers were being very thorough. People that had souvenirs in boxes from other parks were told they had to open the box and the styrofoam packing. They weren't playing either. The bag checkers are usually semi-friendly but none of them were interested in any kind of chit chat.

eta: I don't know how safe I'd feel about this.

That's sad. The idea of something bad happening there is distressing to me, but I'm one of those weird people that likes to take my family there every other year or so.
