Did Huey Long build the LSU Lakes so Southern wouldn't be constructed next to LSU?

Anyone ever hear this rumor?

I heard it and I thought, "no way that can be true."

Any local history buffs want to shed some light on this?

Strong Safety just texted me back and he said that was the main reason, so there you go.

From what I have read it was part of a WPA Project during the Great Depression, but because of it's vagueness it leaves itself open for rumors

Yea, they fired the original planner for southern because he insisted on putting the campus in the middle of a cypress swamp. Actually, his first choice was the middle of the fricking Mississippi River but those racist bastards flooded the area with muddy water and they had to search for alternative sites.

Everyone knows who can't normally swim. Huey actually saved Students of Southern from drowning in the swamps Northeast of LSU.
