Yep. I've never worked in a facility with methyl mercaptan (not counting when it's added to propane). I don't understand how an indoor release is possible.

That's why we need tort reform to effectively cap settlements and to abolish regulatory agencies.

What's crazy is that Dupont basically wrote the book on safety. Most companies model their safety programs after them. Sad story.

Damn that sucks. I hope none of the deaths were attempted rescues. Those are always the hardest for me to accept. Human nature says you want to help a friend in need.

That sucks. Is that a toxic chemical? Never heard of it.

It's the chemical that gives natural gas its distinctive smell otherwise it wouldn't have one.

I just looked it up, it is fairly a safe chemical. They must have been engulfed in it, died from lack of oxygen.

engulfed

It sounds like the incident was indoors...so I think engulfed is correct.

In Texas, the workers compensation bar (where an employee cannot an employer for negligence) does not apply in death cases due to the Texas constitutional provisions on wrongful death. But, the only damages recoverable are punitive damages.

You and I aren't reading the same MSDS.

Oxygen displacement is a risk, but in high concentrations it is Highly Toxic / Acute Toxicity. Which sounds basically like H2S. It has a odor threshold of 1 ppb and OSHA limit of 10 ppm (not sure what a "ceiling limit" is though).

Two of the guys that passes were brothers, evidently one went in to rescue the other.

That normally happens....one guy falls out and the lookout tries to go save him.

A ceiling limit is a concentration which employees should not be exposed to for any amount of time.

Especially with things like H2S. It's drilled into people's heads but human nature is usually to jump in and try to save them.
